Phone line noise

I'm getting ADSL installed shortly. However, my current telephone line has a hum in the background when I listen/talk on the handset. About 2 weeks ago, the line was absolutely clear for about 2 days, then the hum came back again. I am concerned that this may affect my ADSL line/speed? Anyone know anything about this? And does anyone know why my phone line could be making this noise, and how I could get rid of it?

There could be some damage on the line, maybe some water touching the copper or the cables pairs are touching eachother or something else.. From wat it sounds like, your line is only an analogue line atm, so the noise is only effecting that part of the frequency spectrum of your line, which meens it shouldnt effect the ADSL when its installed because it operates on a completely different frequency. How ever there is a chance that it could effect it, but usually those kind of errors dont effect the speed, only connectivity. I wouldnt worry about it right now, wait till ur adsl is installed, ull probably find that the noise will be cleared up when they do testing on your line..

You could phone 10212 and have them come out to test/fix it. I have done this in the past because of 5-10 modem disconnections every night.

IMHO, leave it. I had a similar problem, where there was some stray noise on my line. Called Hellkom, they came over, and since then my line has been dead once a month, every month, this year. Idiots make more problems that they fix.

I had a similar incident.

I noticed that the Telkom "box" on my phone pole had lost its cover (found it on the ground). I also noticed a humming sound, although it was intermittent (I guess when the weather was dry it was OK, when I was damp or rained, humming was there)

Phoned Telkom, only to be told that I would be charged a fee. I told the rather rude gentleman that I was pretty sure that there was something wrong (I had found the cover) Eventually, after a number of minutes, I have up.

I still get the humming from time to time.
