Photo Competition Winner

Well done!!

umm... which picture was it??

Thanks all :)

Congrats!!!

I think I remember you wanting to know the story behind the photo? Here's the short version:

I was out one evening with a bunch of other photographer friends searching for Neon signs to take some neon night-time photography (similar to what Brandon Woelfel does). We were mostly unsuccessful due to the lack of neon and the rain which had been on and off all evening.

Walking back home I noticed a long road with a number of people dotted between wet patches of ground, and a crane looming in the distance. It reminded me of something I'd seen in a Watchmen or Sin City comic, so without thinking I did a handheld snap and moved on. The photo was unremarkable in review, particularly because I had left the camera on portrait settings (50mm prime lens, 1/80, F1.8, 1600 ISO). The grain was high and nothing was really in focus at all (which you can see from the original shot below). But I still had the Watchmen vibe, so I started playing around in Lightroom to bring out depth and atmosphere.

I was lucky, when I took the shot there was no actual rain at that point, but the combination of mist and grain added to the mood. I could've left it as a black and white photo, but adding in the blue gave it a depth that was more in line with my feeling on the night. The photo isn't don't justice at low resolution, but I'll probably have a print of it made.
