May be a silly question - but how does this work?

Is the photographer instantly the owner?
Am I entitled to put Copyright Dolby at the bottom of each photo?
No company or website or anything special required?
Is there a program that can do add this nicely to ones photos?
 
Too late. I've downloaded your Prime Circle photos and I'm currently negotiating with a few newspapers to sell them.

Copyright is yours unless you assign it elsewhere.
Yes, you can use the © at the bottom of your photos but you don't have to.
 
Yes, you are instantly the creative owner of the photographs. You have the right to put a Copyright mark on them, or watermarking.

I created myself a little "Stamp" in GIMP which works okay. I also created my logo/name as a seperate image, in a variety of colours with transparent backgrounds. I open the image as a new layer in my photo, place it, size it, and merge the layers together. Pretty quick and works well.

However, I'm a big fan of the more open-form usage rights system known as Creative Commons.
Instead of "Copyright", you can use a CC mark, and attribute the image as non-commercial non-derivative or whatever mixture of licensing suits you best. For example, you can decide that people are allowed to make derivative works using your images, but they can't make money off it. You can decide that the image may be freely shared, but never sold. You can decide whatever you like.
Then, if people want to use an image for anything, the can simply contact you and you issue the image to them under a specific instance of the Creative Commons.

For any aperture users there is a great plugin called BorderFX. It's highly customisable and best of all free. :) I use it mostly for posting to MyBB and other forums so I can include the basic EXIF on the border.

Always wondered how you do that. Do you have any idea if there is a similar plug-in for Lightroom?

Sorry, I'm sure it exists but I don't know of one off hand.
 
You can also put a copyright notice into exif comments in your camera. Some cameras use a specific exif copyright tag.
 
I can also highly recommend if your camera has the facility to put your name in the EXIF information. But any watermark would also do.
