Photoshop Elements 6 ; layers

I got this last week from my parents and have *never* used an editing program before (other than Picassa for crop/straighten)

One thing I'm curious about it layering. How do I - step by step - open two photos (different) in different layers?

I can create a duplicate layer of the existing layer (if that makes sense) - but can't seem to have two layers of two files (ie home.jpg and couch.jpg)

Anyone help or have a link?

Open both, and drag one to the other (or Select All, Copy, Paste into 1st photo). The copied photo will appear as a layer on the first photo.

Will try that!

I assumed you could just drag from the bottom, but that didn't work. Then I assumed clicking 'new layer' would allow one to open a file but - again - nothing
