Phumzile tackles Telkom

Attempts by the Mail & Guardian to ascertain from Telkom what portion of its SAT-3 capacity is currently underutilised were rebuffed by Telkom, which declared the information “commercially sensitive”.

Similarly, attempts to gain access to its bandwidth rental costs were declined by Telkom, which merely stated that its costing and pricing techniques were based on international accounting practices.
Typical Telkom.

Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka in a briefing at Parliament announced that cheaper broadband was a pillar of its growth strategy

The Deputy President has just scored a few points in my book.

If the Government wants to get a growth rate of 6%, cheaper telecommunications may just be the clincher in achieving this goal.

Just LOOOVED the cartoon with the article. Can't we ask MG to supply it to Myadsl and Hellkom and somehow show it on this page. That would be excellent.

Have you guys noticed that other people seem to be doing Poison Ivy's job?

First it was the Minister of Trade who mentioned that telecoms costs need to be brought down in order to attract more investors.

Then the Minister of Public Enterprises also mentioned this fact after a meetin with the Deputy President and other business execs.

Now it is the Deputy President herself who is not only mentioning high telecoms costs in this country but actually offering some solutions on how to solve this problem. I know this is part of her job, as she has been tasked with the 6% growth strategy, but it seems to me as if Poison Ivy is just nowhere to be seen!!!

Take the last conference that the Deputy President recently gave when she mentioned some of the details about her 6% growth strategy. Every other key ministry had a representative there EXCEPT the Department of Communications. This is inspite of the fact that broadband has been mentioned as one of the key pillars to this drive for 6% growth.

Anyway, I hope the Deputy President will finally be the catalyst from Government we've all been waiting for. After all, we don't have a (effective) Minister of Communications in this country.

If Phumzile takes on Telkom and forces them to lower their tariffs by up to 99% :D , I might just forgive her for wasting taxpayers funds with her recent overseas trip... ;) :D

Seriously what the hell does that mean? "International accounting practices" somehow tie into their "cost and pricing techniques". In other words telco's around the world also rip-off like you do?

Ooooh, conspiracy! :D I heard Telkom use the word "pillar" the other day... Seems like the gov and Telkom take the same "spin" classes...

It is a very rosy article though. Lets hope it pans out.

Agreed! Lets see if she actually achieves anything. If she does, then I would feel a bit more forgiving about the jol in the jet.

/jabu goes accounting

"Hmmmmm..... Overseas telcos charge for lines by distance. Oh boy oh boy oh boy! We at Teklom are FAAAAAAR away from anyone else. Lets charge for all that distance, even though our costs are only a tenth! We can get RICH! Just like those guys at Sasol who produce fuel nice and cheap but sell it at the price of overseas crude. We can get Ferraris, ostentatious houses in Plett, the whole bit!"

;)

So, who's going to wake Poison Ivy up and tell her that the Deputy President wants her to do some work for a change?

Who on earth believes anything a politician says 2 weeks before an election???
