To whom may help a frustrated internetless person.

I moved to a new flat a few weeks back and with my luck the place did not have a Telkom line. So i have applied with Telkom for a new line to be installed but when the tech arrived he could not find my Telkom point in the Flat. I have check and the complex does have Telkom lines. The flats next to me does have a Telephone line and i traced it to the sleeving but apparently my new flat does not work the same.

My worst fear is that no cable has been pulled thru and there is no Line in my flat. Which will mean getting someone to open the sleeving and finding a way to get a cable there.

Now my Question is:

How/Where can i find out if there has ever been a line ( I have phoned Telkom which was not of much help because i had to spell out the Address 5x times or their system is to slow to process the request).

Thanks for reading and help would be much appreciated.

If the flats next to you have Telkom lines, maybe it would help to phone telkom and provide them with one of those numbers, so they can pick up an address. When they get that just give them your flat number and maybe they can pick up if there is history of a line in that specific unit?

It seems odd though that if other flats have lines, yours would be excluded.

The developers normally feed two flats with one pipe , back to back or daisy chain more than two .

Sounds like you have a similar problem to mine.

I have a "blank plate thingy" in my kitchen, and when we opened it there was no draw wire inside.
So either there was one before and is now missing, or there never was one to begin with.

Anyhow, there is no line and Telkom tells me to sort it out myself.
I don't even know where the conduit go to...and apparently no one knows either

The flat above me literally runs their phone line against the wall to the point where it enters another conduit pipe 8m around the corner, which then leads to the manhole 15m behind a wall.

I tell my trustee that there is a problem, but all they do is point finger at Telkom
and according to Telkom, this would have been done by the developers in the beginning

Gonna sit and watch this post if other people have suggestions for you/me.

As fate would have it I moved to a new townhouse this month, and after checking all the points covers I have also hit a blank, no wires.

So, how to get the little wire thingys into my house if telkom are not going to do it?

If it's a complex the developers are to blame, not Telkom. The best you can do is to get someone (electrician etc) in to pull some cabling in for you.

I have a similar problem - with the extra fun of the conduit that runs from the entrance of the complex to my unit being blocked...

Quote to fix this is around 12k :(

Yeah story of my life. It should be expected the way things have been going lol.

No matter, will persevere. I'm in a stand alone unit and close to the road.
So time to go and greet the neighbors on the weekend and get some intelligence.
ADSL is definitely available here, just need to find out where the manhole is and if there is a demarc anywhere on my premises.
If not I will just run the cables myself.

There are multiple conduit points in the house that need to be explored.

Perhaps some useful threads

Can that not be cleared with air pressure? Looking at the web some fiber is actually blown through at 7 bar.

Might be an idea to fill the pipe with water then nuke it with high pressure air to clear the block.

Looks like i am not the only 1.

I have phone complex Mgmt and they are like John Snow....

So i did some investigation and found the incoming telkom lines on the side of the block flats and there are 8 Line ( 8 Flats ) that goes in to separate conduits so that mean somewhere in that flat there is a line hidden from view. Is there any why on toning out that line without destroying the tiles and walls? As i know you can do it with electrical wire.

Not sure on the toning thing but a good question that warrants an answer from someone in the know.

Are all the flats similar? You say 8, are there units above or below you, it may be that the positioning of the conduit would be in a similar place to those if you can get in and have a look?

Run the wire on the outside maybe from the demarc?

Is it wise to just take some electrical wire and start shoving it down the conduit pipe behind the blank (mines in the kitchen) and hope it leads to somewhere? Trying to find the exit point of my conduit which I'm sure is just on the outside of the kitchen as this is where exposed phone cable of the unit above me enters a conduit

But I want to prevent myself from being an idiot, so if this is not the way to go, someone stop me...

Just had the Telkom guy here.
Must say they were quick and very friendly.

Turns out there is some history with this complex, their are 8 units, all owned by 1 guy.

Telkom can run cables from a pole to all the units from the road but need the owners permission as they need to put up a pole or 3.
It wont cost him a cent, but apparently he refused permission based on previous requests from tenants.

Seems like a bit of a chop.

Well.

I have tried to get the wires thru myself but something is blocking the cable about 3m in and there is nothing more i can do. So i am stuck without a telkom line and with that my hope ends of getting ADSL. Will most likely go for a Wireless ISP

Thanks guys for the feedback.
