It helps build the economy! Unless you have to go for the imported product, some local products are not so bad... depends on the product offcourse.

I don't care if it builds the economy, if an European or American product is only a rand or two more expensive, I'd rather go for that because I'm sure it's better quality.

Its not that black and white.
By buying the imported product, you helping them grow, you creating job losses in our country, those people unfortunately and it is a reality will/might turn to crime to survive...
Its really simple, keep your money in house, it will help you!!

In Chikas book he explains how Indian(from India) retain their wealth, they buy Indian clothes, eat Indian food, watch Indian movies etc etc etc...
I think its a tip that SA should make a conscious effort when buying, its a good tip.

I am inclined to agree with the view of buying local.

However, producers and suppliers have to come to the party to make it worthwhile - cost effective and of decent quality.

We have become very much dependent on imported goods for consumption in part due to the low cost thereof in the countries like China, Taiwan etc. Even 1st World countries are caught up in the cycle.

The key factor to getting people to buy local is pricing (and to do away with import parity pricing structures on all levels), a stable and productive workforce (and with the likes of our various Unions, this is a big ask) and of course - quality goods.

Some imported items just taste better, but if the price is significantly lower I suspect many people would not worry as much about the taste as the price

Well, that's not true in all cases. Take our SA manufactured cars. They are awesome quality.

Only problem is, we pay the same price for our manufactured cars as we do for imported ones! WTF?!

I support buying local. It keeps our money in our country. I just wish local stuff was cheaper!

Heh, I was thinking in terms of beer. :D But I agree with the above statement, why the fck does it have to be the same price as imported goods?

If it is going to cost the same i'm not going proudly sa... i'll rather have pasta from italy than local stuff...

Exactly. It's perhaps R1 more expensive, but I'd rather buy that then, than the locally made No Name Brand specials.

Cause they are screwing me, i'll return the favour.

nestle vs lint...... ?

Sad thing is that there are so many chocolates better than Lindt (at similar price) out there in the world. So even for imported goods, we get a narrow selection AND then get shafted.

I know a guy that builds excellent valve amps. Locally, a lot of people would rather import from overseas, than buy his products. Strangely, he sells more of his amps to overseas people than locally. Every review he gets in Audio magazines (locally and internationally), is only good.

Just because a product comes from overseas, does not make it automatically better. People still have to learn that.
