Pick n Pay closing stores

I think PnP missed a step with their market positioning, for a long time they tried to compete with Woolworths and they became expensive without giving real value while checkers slowly built their brand into a premium offering without the woolies prices, They even modeled their store design to resemble that of woolies and its paying off.

Checkers basically always R3 cheaper than Woolworths but only 60% of the quality
Do you really think so? Most of the checkers revamped shop I have been to stand up to woolies quality but then I expect this to be like the apple android debate, you will never accept that checkers have upped their game because you are obsessed with your exclusive "woolies club"

Only have themselves to blame, my local one closes at 6pm since Covid, I cannot make it there on time after work so instead I go to Checkers

It's an image problem.... they used to be cheap and cheerful`, they tried to move the brand up-market but the only thing they changed were their prices. I still sometimes make the mistake of thinking they are cheaper than Woolworths..... but for most things they are not.

Exactly that and they also tried various gimmicks through useless partnerships like MTN Money and TymeBank. Then there was the stint with bitcoin.

None of these benefited PnP or their customers, instead it made the queues longer without them actually making sales.

And they will still never have more than 3 open tills with sad looking cashiers on a month end weekend.
I've only ever once been to a PnP with 3 tills open and that was in Fourways I think. Don't go the the hypers, maybe they are different?

The rest you can be lucky if there are 2 tills and the cigarette counter that are open

The personnel in our local PnP are sour. The next shop is kms away.
Why not convert it to a Checkers?
it's mandatory for PnP and Checkers staff to hate customers and be sour all the time. Ask a person in these stores where an item is and you'll get the kakkest look

Ask someone at woolies, and they stop what they doing, take you to the item, polish your knob and go back to what they were doing

Checkers is clearly doing something right.
There are current three Checkers nearby in a road stretching about 6kms with a fourth one opening in a few months.
We have 2 stores within 5 km - a Hypermarket and a Supermarket.

plans to close unprofitable stores and convert Qualisave stores back to Pick n Pay stores as part of its turnaround strategy.

I knew they'd fail. It's a shame what they tried to do with the brand Mr. Ackerman built. Qualisave is a mess which never should have happened.

I don't shopping at PnP anymore. I don't need a shopper card as I'm fine with my ebucks from Checkers & Engen

Hmm, dunno man had a pretty awful soggy chicken wrap for R55 at checkers with off lettuce. Woolies was R59 and way more consistent and fresh.

Big thing for woolies compared to checkers is service levels and consistency.
Go to a woolies in any town and what you will get food quality wise does not differ. Checkers it's a hit and miss.
