Stealing is walking out of the shop without paying.

My wife and kids normally eat something while doing shopping. We keep the wrappers and pay them at the till. Up until such time that you leave the store without paying for something, only then is it stealing.

What if your wife forgot her purse or you dropped the wrapper?

Unnecessary headache for everyone involved. Better just to pay and leave.

Kids should be taught very early on that they cannot get everything in life by throwing a tantrum. They will go on to grow up believing that it is a solution to everything.

You just need to look at the news to see what happens when they grow up believing this.

It's not about tantrums at all...

Asking if they can have a cold drink and a small snack while doing it. We pay for it either way. How you feel about it doesn't phase me tbh

I have experienced that.

Assuming you can actually pay for the goods, ever considered what might happen if your card is declines or you accidentally forget to bring cash? Officially you are consuming the good without having paid for it, Pick and Pay lets it slide because that is a sensible attitude towards someone who is obviously well off but I doubt they would let a homeless person/vagrant get away with it.

That happened to me at the check out, I was inundated with people, more than happy to pay it for me.

At the risk of stereotyping the folks of Mitchells Plain - I suspect that there might be problems with patrons consuming goods whilst in the store and not paying. I remember seeing a sign in a Spar in a KZN town that read something along the lines of "Eating/Drinking items in this store before payment constitutes theft and patrons will be prosecuted".

Often I find scrunched up chocolate/food packets in trolleys or thrown into shelves whilst browsing in our local shops, even empty cooldrink cans/bottles.

In one Kzn Spar you're not allowed to read newspaper in store.

Judgemental much?
I can't stand stores who don't staff up enough at their tills in order to save costs.
Similarly, they don't have enough staff in their aisles to offer assistance to customers.

If I have to wait in a long queue to hand over my money to a retailer, while 60% of their tills remain unstaffed, I think it's fair to eat/drink while I am waiting (provided I pay at the checkout).
