My girlfriend and me went shopping last month at Checkers. Long story short, it worked us out massively and we spent a load of cash on a few packets.

We went back this month (today) to our trusty Pick n Pay and were pleasantly surprised again. I spent R200 more than at Checkers last month, but that was my budget and I got about 2 times more than at Checkers.

We don't buy our meat etc. from grocery stores usually, since it's too expensive, but basics like Protex shower gel @ R19 is about R11 cheaper than Spar and Checkers.

I use a Protex shower gel a full month and a week, because it creates enough foam and I actually feel clean after using it. Other shower gels, including Radox and Nivea last about 2 weeks. It's a brilliant product, take a look it, they've got a nice oats and aloe one as well which my girlfriend uses.

I take cost saving anything but lightly and Spar and Checkers, even Shoprite is way more expensive than Pick n Pay IMHO.

We bought a plastic dustbin for R99 at Pick n Pay today. When I rented with a buddy, we paid R200 for the same size. Cool beans I thought, quite cheap for a nice looking flip lid trash can. To my surprise, when looking closer I saw that it contained a pasta strainer, 3 tupper ware bowls, a dry rack and a cutlery holder inside of the bin. That's a fricken bargain :p

Ciao ;) :D :p

While I'm glad to hear that you scored yourself some bargains, I think you'll find that the supermarket price differences are a lot smaller than you portray them. They certainly aren't half the price, as you state...

I've got two slips laying next to me, last month's checkers and this month. Just looking at the length of it and all the luxuries I bought extra today, believe me it's close to bloody half. Being a snot nose perfectionist won't change that you're trolling my thread, so ta ta.

I'm trolling your thread? WTF?

You state that Pick N Pay is half the price of all the other retailers. I state that's not true, and you accuse me of trolling your thread? Grow the hell up man.

Now I'll call a spade a spade - you're spewing forth absolute bloody tripe now and considering it is patently inaccurate, it borders on spam...

Bite me>:D

I beg to differ,

We have a set list of stuff we buy bi weekly, PnP is in general 2-3% more expensive. Also PnP's racks might be full, but more often than not I find that they stock less of a selection or available product eg. They would have all the flavours of Nesquick except for the one you want or the whole toiler paper isle would be stocked with 2/3/4ply since they have no stock of one ply.

Also it is more likely that PnP will scan a different price to that is on the rack, and their teller ques seem to move slower than Checkers's ques. Also checkers is cheaper on their fruit and veg than PnP

IMHO I feel they have pulled a woolworths on themselves, expanding to fast.

The stores I can use as reference is: Checkers Menlyn, Checkers Centurion PnP Faerie Glen and PnP Irene Mall, PnP Woodlands.

Well food prices themselves differ from region to region, area to area. I'm not trying to imply that PnP is as a whole cheaper across the country than other stores, but in my town they definitely are. You say Checkers is cheaper on fruit and veg, but I paid R6 less at PnP for potatoes than Checkers.

I saw another thread today that referenced PnP's propaganda emails. I'm not following the news, so as much as I gather they are being investigated for some time of price fixing.

I know I stayed for 14 years in a small town near the Kruger Park and I'm paying less now per month on my whole expences than I did living in that town, so it definitely varies in accordance where you are.

I'm basically just saying thanks to PnP in my area for helping my money go further than the other stores and I've been to most of the others and always come back with a feeling of waste. Shopping at Pick n Pay is anything but a joy, it's full, isles are small and cramped and people are fricken rude who shop there, but it saves me money, so I'll put up with the bad of it.

No, they're not. Read up...

i have to agree with you tera, i have found checkers to be VERY expensive compared to most stores, but also the type of Pick and pay makes a BIG difference, where if you goto a hypermarket things can be as much as R2 cheaper than at a family market

We buy at the PnP hyper in Ghastlyfontein most of the time as the hyper tend to be cheaper.

Went last month to Checkers Hyper in Menlyn for a few things, and walked out when we realized Checkers will be more expensive.

once, we went to a shoprite close to us to buy groceries. they certainly weren't cheaper than pnp. Yes, on certain items they are cheaper. but if you look closely, it is more the products that the low income people would buy. Plus, some of the frozen veggies we bought, had freezer burn. And others had defrosted and was frozen again... (I phoned the supplier about the problems we had with the veggies, that's how I know what the cause was).

PnP Hyper is still the cheapest around. No, not with everything. Some of the luxuries and other extras are more expensive. But the certainly are cheaper than Checkers Hyper or Spar.

PnP supermarkets are more expensive than the hypermarket, but the are slightly less expensive than Spar. So we only buy from them when it is really necessary.

Plus, I always make a point of checking prices on the shelf. If I am uncertain of the price, I check barcodes. Or scan it at a scanner. We usually add up the total as we are shopping, and often I write the prices down on my shopping list. I ALWAYS check the prices as it scans at the till. Because PnP has that scan-right guarantee: if anything scans differently than price on shelf, first item is free and the rest at the lower price.

We've received many free items this way. And don't flame me for "scoring" stuff. It is my right a as a consumer to check if they are doing their work properly. I mean, why else have the scan-right guarantee then?

Whereas any other shop will only refund you your money if you insist, but they won't match PnP's guarantee. (Ok, I know Spar had that thing with double your money back on the baked goods if there was anything wrong with it. Don't know if they still do it.)

We go to PnP Hyper in Faerie Glen. Compared to Checkers Hyper in Menlyn, PnP seems so much cleaner than Checkers, and yes, it's a fact, PnP does seem cheaper over-all.
So:
Woolworths: Too expensive. Even if I could afford their 'organic' veggies, I still couldn't give a siht.
Spar: Cheaper than Woolies, but generally more expensive than PnP. But Spar undisputedly has over-all the best looking and cleanest stores of all. Check out Super Spar in Die Wilgers.
Checkers: I hate shopping at a Checkers. Checkers are usually filthy stores. And they still have those metal trolleys that shock the moer out of you. And they're generally more expensive than PnP.
Shoprite: Like Checkers, though marketed more for the 'poorer' South Africans. Can only find stores in dodgey areas and small towns.
Pick n Pay: The over-all supermarket winner. Stores are usually clean and neat, and they generally do offer the best over-all value and shopping experience.

I find that diffrrent supermarkets discount certain items (Loss leaders.) and charge a premium on others and for a large shop it all averages out. If you identify the loss leaders and shop around to buy them you can save a huge amount.

Yeah - you have to shop around if you want to save and those flyers they pass out are a good place to start.

that's what we do. I check out what's on special where. And then only buy that. It does make a huge savings difference

we get ours weekly in our free local newspaper. I always first check out specials before throwing it into the recycling bag

Jip I noticed that too. Depends what you buy.

I also find Checkers a bit cheaper. Spar, on the other hand, beats both on some items, like Koffiehuis Gold filter coffee. So depends on what you buy IMO.
