So we have three cards in the house and earlier this week my wife checked the rewards. We have a total of R250 on these cards - not bad. Also we have not been using them as much as what we should and now I'm making sure mine is with me at all times.

Will be interesting to hear yours

whats more interesting is .... how much you spent to actually earn that R250?? R25000??
did u ever think you spent that kind of money and PnP??
I know most see the reward, but this helps to put into perspective the kind of spending you doing on groceries/whatever .. scary stuff, considering this points system has not been in place for very long!!

It is R1 for every R100 spent, with the odd double points on limited specials. Too much effort for very little. With my Discovery I get 6% cash back, and 25% on healthy food. Not worth the effort to swipe another card for 1% extra. In about two years I should be close to 10%. I heard though that from next year discovery will work through the smart shoper system?

Have to have Discovery Vitality and a Discovery Credit card, if I remember correctly. I started at 5%. You can go up to 10% depending on your vitality health status. You also get cash back from partner stores like Clicks.

But the system is only worth it if you use your Discovery card correctly and understand the system. We cancelled our Vitality as we only had one month in which our rewards outweighed our costs. It works for some people but not for others.

Better still, ask yourself where the money they give back to you comes from? How do the accountants mark it on the balance sheet?

I got R135.00 back and did not really just target PnP for shopping.

For those of you on discovery/vitality you can get your point to multiply. As mentioned earlier from next year you won't be getting a cash back on your Discovery credit card any more and thus need to make use of the smart shopper card benefit.

I have worked out that if you are on gold vitality status and you buy about R4000 worth of stuff you can get back about R3490 back per year.

Here's the calculations for those who care.. Assuming Gold status on your vitality and you have a Discovery credit card.

1000 points = R10 cash

4,000 x 12 = 48,000 points
48,000 x 8 = 384,000 points
384,000 / (1000 * 10) = R3840 cash back.
R3840 - R350( Discovery Card costs) +- R3490 cash back per year or about 7.2% cash back on your expenses.

All sounds ok, but don't forget vitality subs costs as well.

Yep but there are more discounts than just pnp. You can't really compare the offset if it's used properly.
