Without any sort of DRM you ain't going to sell commercial music legally and Apple does not license their FairPlay DRM scheme so everybody not selling an iPod or want to sell music online is forced to use Microsoft's PlayForSure/Windows Media DRM scheme.

Agreed, this is unacceptable advertising!
I noticed ALL the Look & Listen stores do the same with their instore ad for DVDs, which says DVDs from R39.99 to R130, but there are NONE at R39.99 in ANY store in Cape Town. B*astards!

I should probably be bothered by what some refer to as Apples 'anti-competitive' policies but iTMS is still cheaper by the looks of it so I'm not.

Interesting points. Of course you can buy plenty commercial music legally without drm ( mostly ) at the CD shop down the road ( even Sony-BMG have now hopefully got the point that drm and rootkits on CDs are not clever ). But these stupid music companies think they just have to have a drm for downloadable music.
I hope Apple are not ultimately shooting themselves in the foot by forcing the entire rest of the industry over to MS.

Some musings on the worth of downloaded music.
You can buy a fairly decent CD for R120 or so. Say the printed disc itself, jewel case, inserts cost R10. You are down to R110 for the music. The CD has 10 tracks - so you are at R11 per track. CD sound is 44100x16-bit samples/second which equates to 689 kilobytes/second. Your download from PickNPlay is 128 kilobytes/second. So you reduce your R11 in proportion and get R2-04c say R2. But you cannot play it in half of your devices because of drm and wma format and whatnot. I figure you are down to R1 per track. At that sort of price I might even bite occasionally.

On the other hand you're only paying for the songs you want and that's worth a premium. If I only want 1 song why should I pay r120 for it even if it does include 10 other tracks, a jewel case and a cover (which can come included with the download from some services like iTMS).

Do a Google for "FairUse4wm".
Which you can still do - iTMS offers most albums at better than local prices and generally with little extras such as videos to make up for not having the physical media. You also still get all the artwork and the inserts. They also seem to price the albums at a lower cost per song ratio.
My only gripe with iTMS is the low bit-rate but general consensus is that will be increased soon.
btw why is it that any techie item has a magical 50-100% aditional markup i notice from basically all comercial stores. unconventional/importers have a lesser markup.Get it while it lasts
