Pierre Durand currently runs the Evolutionary Medicine Unit in the department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He holds degrees from Kings College London (MSc) and Wits University (BSc, MBBCh, MMed, PhD) and recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Arizona.
Pierre is interested in the molecular basis for cooperation, with particular reference to evolutionary transitions and the generation of complexity that underlies the living world. The insights gained often have applications in medical research like cancer and host-pathogen interactions.
