Sardines and pilchards are the same thing. Tinned sardines are usually not all sardines, and tinned pilchards are also a variety of small fish, interestingly enough. There is no way for them to check each individual fish for its species, so they just lump them all together.

Definitely wouldn't work with canned tuna though...
