I hit a pothole very bad , both right side wheels went thru, Front tire, Rim and shock needs to be replaced .

Back axle needs to be replaced , bended .

Panel shop quote is about R 30 000 with Genuine parts .
There quote with pirate parts is about R 11 000

My access was R3000 when I started my insurance with them and is now R3800 , apparently it increases with the yearly premium.

Now on top of that they want to add a betterment access of R1800 , because I will be in a better position than I was with this new tire.
a New tire is about R1600

Is this fair ?

No, and you should place a formal objection on record.

In doing so, they have to respond.

Based on their follow-up response, you can decide whether you want to lodge a dispute.

What year model is your car? New car gets new parts. Old car gets old.

Betterment on tyres is standard yes, unless its brand new and you have the receipt to show it.

1) the Excess increasing is total BS and hence I would never use them as a broker. Did they inform you of the Excess increases?
2) When it comes to tires this is a semi std practice as the policy is a policy of indemnification and not betterment.
3) Ask them for a calculation on the betterment for the tyres.

Insurers don't use "pirate parts". There's new parts straight from factories and then there's old parts already in circulation at various outlets. Insurer's know exactly what each cost, because they have the price lists for them. They're not sourcing part from Gumtree. They are sourcing it from approved repairers on their panel of preferred repairers.

You won't get new parts for a 6 year old car unfortunately. The only time you will would be if it couldn't be sourced.

I am done with them , when this claim is settled .
Going back to the old way , Broker and Santam .

Can I ask them to remove the tire and I will get it myself ?

So it is used parts then , coming from Speedway in PTA

Yes you can if that's going to help financially.

Out of warranty cars usually get pirate or used parts.

Used body parts are not bad because it's genuine but I'm not so sure about used mechanical parts. What if the shock starts leaking after 2 months.

I would say a used rim for example is fine if they are going to respray it etc but used shocks and real axile. It needs to pass wheel alignment, or you will forever be changing tires. I think fight for genuine parts.

I will just leave this here......

That is the issue , how do I know , the rear axile is straight , it might come of a write off , and moered with a hammer to look straight and resprayed

I'll let tyre slide, but at least try to make an effort when you write them a letter complaining otherwise you'll just be ignored.

What on earth **** insurer have you been working with?

Never in my life would my insurer be happy with anything but original parts from a reputable panel beater.

Warranty has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's utterly irrelevant to the insurer, that's between you and the car manufacturer.

Worked in a panelshop for 8+ years.

They never pay for genuine parts for cars out of warranty unless there are not other options like can't find pirate or secondhand parts. They don't even pay for water-based paint and this is at factory approved panel shop.

Cars under warranty always get genuine parts and go for post accident warranty check if airbags deployed as there are certain things only dealerships can do.

Old Mutual and Santam are the worst. Outsurance are probably the best.

In my experience Cavedog is right, They usually fix with second hand/pirate parts if the car is out of warranty. They only use genuine parts if warranty is still valid .

It even states this in the Policies.

All the more reason to buy a Kia then it seems.

Mine has gone on for virtually the same repair three different times and two of those out of warranty and every time the spares came directly from Kia for almost the exact same value too.

Opel Corsa before that also got genuine parts when it was almost 10 years old, but in fairness those models probably shared a lot of parts.

Third party parts I can understand, it’s the second hand I was objecting to.

Yeah it sucks that they do this, But the insurance board/ombudsman or whoever signed off on this "law" a few years back so now insurance companies are saving themselves money by doing this.

But I would still rather get second hand parts if the work is done right than wait 3+ months while waiting for genuine parts. (Haval and Chery I am looking at you)
