Back in March I used to get around 450MS on my 1Mb line (Shaped) and I was alright with that.

Now rejoining again in December, I now have a 2Mb line (Shaped) and am on a "New Players" server with fairly low population, and I'm getting 700MS?

Is this because Telkom's doing line tests for 2010 (I heard this from someone), Is it because WoW is doing something with Patch 3.3?

I've tried all those "Latency reducer" crap with registry editing and network card changing advanced settings, I just want a logical explanation why I'm getting horrible lag all the time now?

PS: A friend of mine playing same realm is getting same Latency (700MS +/-) with a 4Mb line, and he also used to get around 400/450, and another friend with 512Kb line same?

Try an unshaped account?

There's many choices now. Web Africa has an unshaped account running on their network that gave me 230ms pings to EU

SAIX unshaped gave me +- 320ms and Afrihost with their "after hours unshaped" is more or less the same.

Heard that MTN/Verizon is quite slow. If you get an unshaped (prepaid) Web Africa account now you'd be able to switch between their network, Verizon AND SAIX for unshaped giving you the option to choose whichever is best at the time for raiding

Yes I know all about shapped and unshapped, about the bottle neck and all that.

But that doesn't really answer my question about my ping being lower in beginning of the year, and now its crazy high?

Well, considering you only have 2mbps, it gives me the idea that you're kind of far away from the DSLAM to begin with. What is your Line Attenuation/Noise Ratio?

Is your friends connected in the same area as you?

Your question is too open ended. There are many reasons why you have a crappy ping.

You cannot... and i mean CANNOT play WOW with a shaped account. Buy an unshaped account as was suggested. If you still find WOW lagging use lowerping. Using lowerping and an unshaped account from WebAfrica you can get latencies as low as 220ms for raiding

i have same problem running on 600 - 700 ping when i use to get 400 ping

was also around same time frame as you

I lol'd as I currently do. Got my sons and myself playing on a 512k afrihost account. But I must add that I haven't raided using the Afrihost account.

Line Attenuation 58.5 dB 28.5 dB

58.5dB - Downstream
28.dB - Upstream

Raiding on a shaped account is a bit of a no no. What server are you on?

Remember that if you didnt disable P2P and background downloading in your downloader, other people will be getting the file from you, adding loads to your connection.

Im getting 300 to 500ms on my Vodacom 3G and no dc's during raids. :)

I was raiding on Arathor and Dragonblight (EU).

Now I'm back to leveling on Chamber of Aspects - Alliance - Ninjastrike.

I don't think my P2P background downloader is on, I can see what bandwidth is being used threw my G15 addon

I get 230-270 lat without a tunneling service with MTN.

I do agree that the lat has been going up the last few weeks/months but it seems to come and go.

Hmmm, Now I'm getting 550MS, But it's still morning and theres not a lot of players online?

Seems weird I'm getting high latency on a very low populated server?

Firstly Try a different Wow server. Some of the newer servers may be in some remote places to give the people there better latencies. But as it gets fuller you will start experiencing more lag.
The SAIX connection also have it's ups and downs regarding Latency. Some months it is good and other it is just horrible to work with. I have the option to switch between SAIX and VERIZON and some days they are hugely different. I have not had ping over 450ms in quite some time though...

It may most likely not be related to the server you play on at all, but purely your ADSL exchange close to your home, or a shaped connection being routed via satalite.

If you're with Web Africa then you have 3 choices now, SAIX/Verizon and their own network. I'm interested to hear how their own unshaped compares re: latency. WAMatt has said several times they're going to try to be the "gamer" ISP, so they even go as far as to prioritize traffic to WoW servers...

Actually...

One more thing that factors in as well.
There are separate server farms. A total of 6 server farms in EU if im not mistaken. Choosing a realm on a server farm furthest away from you, even if you were unaware of it, can cause higher latencies than what you may have been used to.

http://www.wowwiki.com/EU_English_realms_info

There ya go.

Considering the distance from SA to say, the coast of France on the Med, does the few additional hundred miles between server farms make that much of a difference ? Isnt your latency buggered before it leaves Africa ?

Yes, as much as your latency is already buggered leaving our coastlines and/or borders...

Do you REALLY want 13 extra hops added to that problem?

EDIT: 13 is a number i pulled out my ___ btw
