Hi All,
This is my first post, I hope this is in the right category, as its about ping speeds relevant to gaming, but the gaming category seemed to be more about games themselves. This post concerns latency with ADSL connections. Anyway, I wanted to test the difference in ping speeds between a shaped account (which I unfortunateley have through Mweb), and an unshaped account (Vanilla kindly offered my a 100mb demo account for testing purposes). My current account is a 3gb shaped adsl package on a 384 kbps circuit.
Here's what I did:
I ping tested a series of local and international ip's before moving onto to actual gaming servers. These were my results:
International IP's:
75.126.40.135
ping (unshaped) - min 759 max 1002. ping (shaped) min 388 max 392
64.233.183.147
ping (unshaped) - min 224 max 272. ping (shaped) min 471 max 474
69.147.114.210
ping (unshaped) - min 305 max 340. ping (shaped) min 386 max 438
209.3.224.24
ping (unshaped) - min 389 max 406. ping (shaped) min 348 max 359
So unshaped faster on 2 and shaped faster on the other 2. Ok?
Then I moved on to test actual ping speeds once I had connected to 5 gaming servers. The game I used to test was GRAW (Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter). I tested 2 Local and 3 international servers. Unforunately I could not get the servers IP addresses as some gaming clans do not give this information. A further look on their websites proved unfruitful. My reasoning was that if gaming ports are unshaped, this would yield far more meaningful results than the simple ping test above. Here are the details:
GRAW Server name Shaped Unshaped IP Address
SGS Coop (SA) 38 50 196.4.79.65
SGS HH (SA) 43 41 196.4.79.20
British Paras(UK) 360 300 ?
BDA (US) 406 380 ?
AVG Virginia (US) 423 344 ?
I must admit for the local servers the results are completely unconvincing. The international server ping times on unshaped were better, but my question is: Is the saving in time good enough to warrant me moving from a shaped service to an unshaped service (The average time saving in milliseconds across the 3 international servers is 55 = miniscule?) The costs are significantly higher, and will it make THAT much difference to my gaming performance? As it is, a ping speed on an unshaped service of 300 is unacceptably high when you're playing against some guy in the states with a ping of 30. It looks to me like I would rather stay on my shaped service, as the decreased cost outweighs the benefit of an average of 55ms.
I would like advice please. My testing is rudimentary, and I have only has adsl for a month, so I could be considered a Newbie.
Regards,
Orvor.
