Piracy is not theft

Copyright laws are completely absurd tbh.

A pharmaceutical company that spends billions on developing a safe vaccine is given a 25 year monopoly on its product.
A song that someone scribbles down on a sheet of paper lasts the lifetime of the claimant plus 70 years.

Copyright and patents should be reformed to be the same intellectual property law. The monopoly should last 20 years, and has to be explicitly applied for, like a patent.

The only types of intellectual property that should be perpetual is trademarks, because those allow a way for a company to protect its reputation.
 
I am probably one of the gullible few that still does it.... but I pay my TV license.
I also pay my monthly premium for Netflix.

And still I am not allowed to watch the shows that I would like to.
The same government that is blocking piracy is also blocking the legal routes.
They are regulating and limiting the available content.
We are not allowed to get all the services (legally) in SA. I.e. Disney Plus.
The local services (SABC, eTV) are useless.

When last did someone try to pirate music?
It is so damn easy to get it legally that it is not worth the effort to try and pirate it.
Cant say the same about TV/Movies.

And why are they blocking piracy? Because they cant TAX it.
 
The “I want it for free” culture. Exists in all societies, but like racism, it’s on a another level in SA

imagine your car gets stolen, but its still there in the morning.

its hated, because they have no way to PROFIT from your use of it.
it is possible to fight piracy, effectively, it will simply cost more than they willing to spend.
again, supply and demand.

I guess it's because even if you want to pay you can't necessarily get what you're looking for. Take my very old (72) year old sister for example. She loves watching The Bold & The Beautiful (I know - don't ask) - but SABC removed it. Now she has nowhere to watch it. So please tell me which service she can subscribe to where she can watch it? It can however be downloaded from some torrent sites.

How does one legally get the Marvel series in SA? Did not know there was a way. I pay for showmax and netflix. There are shows I could watch on netflix USA that I can't watch on neftflix SA despite paying the same amount for a netflix subscription either way. How is that fair?

I honestly try to be legal, but if they want to be idiots then screw them. I contribute where I can, and if they continue to insist on being idiots then I will get it another way.

If you can't get it here legally, not watching it won't kill you. you will be okay if you miss a marvel series. I promise.

Why, because you say so ?. Clearly you never produced copyrighted material in your entire life, I have produced copyrighted material before in fact several 1000's of material. Released commercially and my copyrights have been infringed on more times then I can count. The fact is copyright is automatic protection, and not some thing that should have to be applied for, it like the automatic protection of your freedom of speech and constitutional rights, it is a basic right that some one else should not be able to profit of your artistry and imagination.

Copyright fosters growth in artistic freedom and imagination without the basic protection afforded by it what do you think is going to be the end result, do you really think some one is going to spend hours and hours producing some thing that can be copied in an instant hell no.

Movies, music, games any thing currently in the digital landscape would be vastly different and more barren, lifetime plus 70 years is more then fair some countries have 50 years.

Copyright is there to protect artistic freedoms and applies to every one, patents isn't there to protect artistic freedom it is there to protect intellectual skills and property.

As some one with 1000's of copyrights against my name that my livelihood depends on, you can go jump off a cliff........................

Well the point is people for forget about the automatic protections received and taken for granted. Copyright is there as it protects artistic expression among other things, without or short term protection there is really no incentive to do so as you receive no protection for that expression.

He made the assumption you should apply for copyright, which is just daft to be honest as someone reliant on copyright protection for income, gets my blood boiling it isn't like some copyright holders haven't intentionally given up their copyrights to the public domain or forgo the copyright altogether before expiry I have done this personally, I guess ignorance is bliss.

As 3D content developer my work has been published on steam under license, without the copyright protection there is literally nothing stopping someone from uploading said content to unreal or unity store and profit from the content created or reverse engineering making a couple of changes and selling it.It is pretty unique in design as there is nothing else on the market like it.

It's not governments but distributors who have a monopoly in this instance.

It's actually a good argument. You need to return it because it's physical and you have to give someone else a chance. Does not change if it was digital you'd be "infringing on copyright". So what is different when it comes to digital goods when only one person uses it at the same time? Where did we drift from the original idea of copyright into the world of licensing?

As for a library that has every single book ever produced, the library of congress. You can't publish a book with an ISBN without submitting two copies.

As was previously stated if you can't pay for it then don't get it. But in what world is it right if you have the money to pay for it you shouldn't be allowed to? That smells like vested interests and actually goes against the intent of copyright so they can go and screw themselves in that regard.

Just because something exists, does not automatically mean you are entitled to it.
