Luxury yachts offer pirate hunting cruises

Luxury ocean liners in Russia are offering pirate hunting cruises aboard armed private yachts off the Somali coast.

Wealthy punters pay £3,500 per day to patrol the most dangerous waters in the world hoping to be attacked by raiders.

When attacked, they retaliate with grenade launchers, machine guns and rocket launchers, reports Austrian business paper Wirtschaftsblatt.

Passengers, who can pay an extra £5 a day for an AK-47 machine gun and £7 for 100 rounds of ammo, are also protected by a squad of ex special forces troops.

The yachts travel from Djibouti in Somalia to Mombasa in Kenya.

The ships deliberately cruise close to the coast at a speed of just five nautical miles in an attempt to attract the interest of pirates.

"They are worse than the pirates," said Russian yachtsman Vladimir Mironov. "At least the pirates have the decency to take hostages, these people are just paying to commit murder," he continued.

Aside from the bs worthiness of the story, do not both pirates and pirate hunters deserve each other. If one, say the pirates, stop their pirate ways, the other will have nothing to do. What are the population densities of each group? Will a sustainable balance be achieved between the two groups, to allow this to continue forward, or will one group dominate and crowd out the other group ?

If a balance between the two groups is found, then this is a major problem in the making but if the hunters can reduce the pirate population to levels that it become unacceptable to pirate, that would be a good thing in the long term. Conversely if the pirates manage somehow to wipe out the pirate hunters, then the threat will increase to a level that the world governments would be pressured into taking a more active role in reducing piracy in the region.

As to the humane side, currently how do these human pirates benefit the future of mankind. What, in their current state, do they offer the world in a positive future looking manner. Secondly how much will it cost to bring them up to a level where they can make a positive contribution. Can the world not get better and quicker value for money spend by spending it in areas, where growth is visible and more quickly attainable.

Somebody posted something like this last month. I suspect these are hoaxes. It is against International maritime law for civilian ships to carry any kind of weapons. So they moment any cruise line being to offer such a deal, they effectively become "pirates" themselves. Not to mention the danger, insurance issues, and lawsuits. I think someone is just making stuff up.

I've no doubt its probably a hoax. But still a good idea. Seacom should try this, maybe they can get back on schedule then.:D

Why would be a hoax, i am not sure Russia really give a shyte gary.

Besides the pirates are bringing this on themselves, the hunters become the hunted.

Now in order to navigate through the area, sail close to the shore and slowly and nobody will attack you :D

1) because they would then become a target themselves for every military naval vessel in the area.
2) Which cruise line is going to be stupid enough to lend their vessel to such a cause.
3) How are they going to find enough customers instead of rather using the cruise ship for what it is normally used for?
4) Which insurance company is going to underwrite such a trip?
5) While there is not much government in Somalia, there are enough people there willing to press charges of murder against such an endeavour.

Come on man... think rationally

Well i am sure the people who have put this idea together are not a bunch of poor people living on the street.

At 3500 dollars a day all you need is 100 people and your making 3.5m dollars a day gary, i repeat 3.5 million a day.

Now let's say it is a 5 day cruise, that is 17.5 million dollars.

Come on Killa... there a thousand things wrong with this... not least that it is illegal in every country in the world. It violates about a million international laws. It's a hoax. Hunting humans is illegal in every country of the world.

I think this is brilliant. "International law" means people standing by and letting situations like Sudan and Zimbabwe happen. I think this kinda activity would put the right kinda people together in the right kind of environment (far away from me). For me.. its win win. If the pirates win.. a murderer dies, if the hunter dies... a murderer dies.

Now excuse me while I phone some Russian friends and offer them a new package known as the "Hillbrow Holiday". Same concept :D

Mathematics not your strong suit? 3500 * 100 = 350000. Four zeroes. Repeating doesn't make it true.
