It's a 1-year upgrade window.

This is purely to "push" people into taking the plunge so that they can get more people on the same platform more quickly.

I suspect it's specifically targeted to Enterprise.

Odds are the 1-year plan will get an extension anyway and even if it doesn't that the price will be as close to free as you can imagine.

It's not 1 year as in a timer that goes off and says now you pay. It's a 1-year in which you have an opportunity to upgrade free of charge.

It's now a "platform" not an OS any more and that's why it's going to be free.

Not quite the same - apple never gave away Mac OSX to pirates since you're only supposed to run it on an Apple device. Apple devices get it for 'free' from the start. They just give free updates to legitimate users.

What MS is doing is effectively allow you to become a legitimate user if you pirate it.

Sauron teh ev0l lord said it already, but it's not like your "free win10 upgrade license" will expire after a year.

You get windows 10 for free, until the machine dies. Just like windows DSP licensing has always worked.

So if you are living under a rock and don't catch on the the free copy of windows that's available, then I guess MS is gonna screw you over.

Remains to be seen if this is just to rope everybody in, but yeah. Gratis windows, I'll take it thx.

Yeah it is slightly different in that sense.

But OSX wasn't always free either and had plenty of pirates.

Apple didn't specifically go out of their way to say that pirates could upgrade as well, but it worked exactly the same as Apple was never product key and activation happy in the first place.

Apple never ever worried about pirates and never tried to block them in the first place.

Before the Appstore there was not legitimate or illegitimate user to Apple as they simply didn't care or even have any mechanisms in place.

Now it's different obviously as your purchases are linked to your Apple ID.

Lol.... Once windows 10 is released to the general public everyone will be able to register on their website and enrol for free windows 10 lifetime. Only for first year thereafter the people who have just built their machines and want an operating system after a year will have to pay for it. Those who enrolled/qualified for free windows will receive their key.

It's on Microsoft website if you check Windows 10. Only for the first year thereafter if you want another key you'll have to pay for it.

Vendors are always complaining that sales are down.... Let's see once they give away free copies of windows if sales will boost.. I know a lot of people who don't want to pay for a luxury OS. Rather use free OS line Ubuntu

The catch is that they want you to start using their other services and buy apps from their store.

Vendors will become less and less relevant.

Third party Apple stores like Digicape have already felt this knocking them quite hard as everyone buys their stuff from the Appstores on their desktops and mobiles now and there is no revenue to be made by distributors.

They are now purely hardware and support structures and nothing more.

By device, what are they referring to? Think of it as a PC. Is it linked to the MOBO, CPU, HDD/SSD? Just asking to clarity as that could still be a problem then for me if bits or pieces are changed out.

I have noticed on Windows Store (8.1) free games from Microsoft but they not free you've to buy add ons etc. Loving my Windows 8.1 experience for over a week... At first it was a little complicated but onceI the system had updates applied the system. Was running smoothly.. pinned important stuff to the task bar. Example control panel to check for updates as the Charm isn't responsive or progress inductor

think, pc, laptop, phones tablets. ( not all phones or tablets will be allowed for upgrade, i think)
 
How many free copies can one get cause I've got a couple of devices that will require the free upgrade.
 
Someone wants to boost their app store sales :whistle:

It will also help with legacy support, that can be a b1tch.
 
So you upgrade for free and then after a month it asks for an activation code to go further. :whistle:
