Pitbull kills owner

The correct method for separating fighting dogs:

Pepper spray.

Failing that: you need two people to do this - one person behind each dog, grab the hindquarters above the 'knee' (just below the hock for the cooks), twist the legs in one direction so that the animal is forced onto its side then pull the animals away from each other.

That is the only way to do it and ensure that you do not get bitten.
 
I heard a broom stick up the backside is also quite effective at separating fighting dogs.

glad someone mentioned that. there are only 2 problems with "Pitbulls" here... firstly they've become a status symbol amongst certain kids, and too many of these dogs are in the owner ship of people (kids) who don't know how to care for them. There's also the dog-fighting crowd on the Cape Flats adding to this.

Secondly, most of the "pitbulls" i see being dragged around by their wannabe hooligan owners don't really look like Pitbulls anymore, a large percentage of them are crossbred in one way or another. Too thin, not the right muscle definition, not the right face. Crossbred, insane dogs that are bred to be vicious, all giving real Pitbull Terriers a bad name.

I used to have that mindset, do a bit of Googling and you'll find they make very good pets even more so with kids so long as they're treated well and they don't come from a fighting dog heritage. I still wouldn't own more than one though.

Foolish remark.

Our Labrador is the friendliest dog you could imagine, but she dislikes kids. So we have a sample of a breed famed for being good with kids who I'm afraid might just bite a kid if the kid teases her. And that's simply because a kid let her fall when she was a puppy.

Same with just about any dog - the dog's owner to a large degree determines the dog's behaviour. Even owners who don't abuse the dog on purpose can neglect the dog with regards to attention, exercise and training. And people often forget that a dog is an animal - they can, and do, lose control. A healthy dose of respect for the dog is a must - remember that even if you're the boss, the dog's gotten the teeth. For example, I won't take a bone from any other dog than my own. My Labrador trusts me completely, even with her food. But that trust is build on hours of training where I stroke her head while she fed. If she gets into a fight, I won't try to pull them apart, as that's simply looking for trouble.
 
Personally think it all depends on how the dog was raised. Breed only plays a role to a certain extent. As Tacet said, you find world famous kid friendly Labradors that don't like kids much. Goes with any dog. Raise it as a monster and you'll get a monster one day.

You my friend are a moron. How can you say a person who owns a pitbull is an idiot? This owner got what he deserved for treating the dog like crap. Any other dog can and will do it if they are treated like shyt. It's the same as saying every person who has a child is an idiot because abused kids kill their parents :rolleyes:

This is 100% spot on. Treat any dog like you would your best friend and make sure all his needs are seen to. And you have the best companion you could ever ask for.
 
The trick with any dog is balancing how to show them you're incharge while making them part of the family, people who take the first part to the extreme get attacked, people who take the second part to the extreme get a dog like Marley.

Even Cesar Milan said on his show the pitbuls are people friendly dogs, probably more than any other dog
