That's exactly what happened to my dogs, a pitbull and a staffie. Tried to separate them and got a bite in the hand. Obviously that was dumb of me but I panicked *shrugs*. The water came in handy though. And the pitbull was the quiet and playful one.
The correct method for separating fighting dogs:
Pepper spray.
Failing that: you need two people to do this - one person behind each dog, grab the hindquarters above the 'knee' (just below the hock for the cooks), twist the legs in one direction so that the animal is forced onto its side then pull the animals away from each other.
That is the only way to do it and ensure that you do not get bitten.
