We have had absolutely pitiful ADSL speeds for about a week now - significantly lower speeds than dialup. I have tried to run speed tests, but I can't get any of them to load - they just time out. Some sites are not too terrible - Standard Bank is about dialup speed, and Gmail in HTML mode (I can't load it in standard mode)

We've had Telkom reset the exchange port, but no luck. I'm trying to log a fault, but have been hanging on at Telkom for 50 minutes now.

Any ideas? We're in Weltevreden Park.

Edit - just logged a fault with Telkom. They asked me to run the Telkom download test, which I did. Before it eventually timed out at 493KB, It was managing download speeds of a blazing 2.2KB/sec.

I'm getting really annoyed with the slow ADSL speeds over the last week or so.
I can only get about 2.5KB/sec on SSH (port 22) connections to overseas and that is one of the ports that should be prioritized.

What the hang is going on?

Telkom explains slow ADSL speeds

Many ADSL subscribers have been experiencing slow speeds over the past few days. Telkom explains.

Very slow speeds on their ADSL service were reported by subscribers from across the country. Many users felt that not enough bandwidth is allocated to the growing ADSL subscriber base, and wondered if there were any network related problems causing the slow speeds.

Telkom said that it doubts that any network related problems were to blame for the slow speeds, but that the ‘end of month peak’ was most likely the culprit.

“Telkom's investigations did not reveal any significant failures in our network that could explain the slow response experienced. We did however increase the international bandwidth temporarily to address the end of month peak, which is a normal monthly occurrence,” Telkom said.

“We suspect that the slow response is related to the sudden increase in demand for international bandwidth as customers attempt to utilize their monthly cap optimally. Telkom will continue to monitor the situation and address bottlenecks as they occur,” Telkom concluded.

Yeah but we're into a new month already.

when will it be over?

So I know that no one can really predict the future, but any prediction on when the pathetic ADSL speeds will improve?

Yeah but we're into a new month already.

Yeah but every one has now decided its best to get in early than wait for the Christmas rush at the end of the month, did Telkom not tell you this. :D

:D That's a good one. Just now we'll have a middle of the month rush too.

I remember when international pings were around 700ms on IS,now the minimum i seem to get is 1400ms...

On 4mbit line at the moment, downloading international on multiple threads and crawling at 100kb/s. I can tell its not that site as all browsing is like a dead dog...

Like Escom we are running out of capacity?

Cape Town is soooo slow. This has been going on for some time and is not a month end event! We are into Feb and it is continuing.

I think Telkom is running out of capacity just like Escom following the increase in the user base.

This does not augur well for the future. Just think about the world cup when huge numbers of tourists arrive.

I think the Telkom lack of capacity is artificial though, they're just unwilling to use extra SAT3 capacity. The problem with the WC won't even be the tourists, it'll be the broadcasts that are needed.
