Plain cigarette packaging likely to snowball globally

I've never seen a cigarette ad on TV or heard about it on radio. Peer pressure is a big one I'd say, most smokers I know started in school.

The current restrictions on advertising are pretty tight

Wish they would bring these in for e-ciggs. If I have to see another twisp advert. It's basically the same as the old cigarette ads with making it seem cool and classy but just replaced the cig with the vape.

What truly irks the puritan do gooders who enjoy taking away other people's pleasures is that a core of smokers stubbornly refuse to give it up. Of course the puritans also go after the safer alternatives like snus and electronic cigarettes, hence showing their true motives (which have nothing to do with health or saving money).

Cigarettes have no function whatsoever.
Wrong. Quite clearly so.

It is costing you a massive amount directly in your medical insurance premiums and less directly in tax and things like GDP. Some stats from the CDC
It's not necessarily costing anything. It could even have a net benefit. So if people want to use the economic argument don't be surprised when it turns against you. South Africa could certainly save a fortune if they encouraged more smoking, especially amongst the poor.

There are some things you'd want to check into, like who is doing the research, their potential biases, and the trends prior to the introduction of the packaging. In the UK they were caught out lying about the positive impact on asthma rates of banning smoking in cars. The Australian government had dishonest research to demonstrate the benefits of their bicycle helmet laws. The Swedish government used fake numbers to prove the benefits of their prostitution laws.

This has been law in Namibia for the last two years..... Hard graphic images on the packets....has not detered the smokers one bit, with even some folk just transferring their cigs into a custom tin...

From what I've heard (and I stand to be corrected of course), Dubai has similar laws to us and there are large warning labels on the smokes and the guys still buy as much as always except now they're picky about their warning labels.

There are plenty of numbers supporting this kind of intervention, but form an anecdotal side I am sure that I would have been affected by this in my younger days when I smoked. I remember how much the "brand" was important as a kid to be cool. Smoking alone wasn't enough, it had to be the right brand as well.

I think the key point here is that if this had no effect on the uptake of smoking, the number of people stopping smoking or the brand loyalty of smokers the cigarette companies would not take issue with it. They know exactly how effective it is and that is why they are fighting tooth and nail to stop this kind of legislation.

if you were clever, you smoked the brand nobody wanted, then nobody/few will bum a smoke :P

Tbh, if you smoke, nothing will really make you quit.
Not the taxes, not the box it comes in, not the thousand and one labels warning you.
Only way a person can truly stop is by themselves, very little otherwise will do it.

Or never starting in the first place, and making the best decision of ones life ;-)

I was at a restaurant at the waterfront (bright water commons) and people were smoking in the outdoor section (Which had a small tiny sign saying no smoking). :erm:

The taxes might make you stop if you can't afford the cigarettes anymore.

The idea is that it stops a new generation of kids from taking up smoking.
