Hey guys so the wife and I are planning to go on a holiday. Is it best to go through an Agency or should we try and arrange everything ourselves. It seems like a lot of these travel agencies actually have very good deals, almost too good to be true. I've looked at Chelsea Travels and Flight Centre.

We have a budget of R50k for two people, ideally for 2 weeks, anything less and it will feel like a waste of time. We are considering Bali, Thailand and Zanzibar. Most of the agencies only seems to have 7 day packages. I have this feeling that if you try and extend through them they will just add some extra markup to the price.

Oh this is for around end May / start June

Ideas?

I though this thread was going to be about something like a bank robbery.

Some people confuse broadband with hiway :D This is not a travel forum bud. You want to go to Bali? Click on www.bali.com I hope this helps . . .

Personally i would plan it myself, its a lot of fun and you can find some great deals on flights etc, you pay for what YOU want and not what they include in the package etc!

I cant comment on other places, but if you book a fair amount of time in advance for Thailand 50k should get you pretty far... I guess you 1st plan of action is to decide where you want to go! I thoroughly enjoyed Thailand(we spent 2 nights in Bangkok, arrived in the morning so it was almost 3days, and 7 nights in Phuket and i had a blast, we where there over new years).

Im the type of person that likes to plan his own thing, you i guess thats up to you! Good luck and have fun!

Went to Thailand last year November, booked through STA Travel. They gave us an amazing deal. R7500 each, from JHB -> Bangkok -> Phuket -> JHB. That included airport tax as well as accommodation for 3 nights in Bangkok and 5 nights in Phuket. Also included breakfasts every morning.

It sounds unbelievable at that price but it was a great holiday. Only let down was the room in Phuket didnt have a view, so upgraded when i got there and it only cost an extra R700 for the whole 5nights. Thailand is incredibly cheap and even with R10k spending money I lived like a king and ate prawns and lobster and drank from pineapples almost every night. Make sure you go with empty bags and a toothbrush.. thats it.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I am going to contact both travel agencies as well as a bit of DYI and take the deal that works out the best.

Yep, I have read about that on this forum too. Though I found that often the Agents deals are gone none the less. e.g. Cathay Pacific has flights to Bali for R9.5k to R11.5k. This is the cheapest that I could find. There are some deals where you get a to stay somewhere for a week and fly there for the price of a ticket aboard Cathay Pacific [:D] I know that it is not all roses and fairies, but they aren't exactly ripping us a new one either, for the most part.

Lol Thanks Alf101 :) I specialize in all Zanzibar / Tanzania / Kenya / Uganda and Rwanda tours - basically all wildlife safaris and beach destinations! I will get in contact with the OP.

Maldives?
