Three year old Plasma 42" telefunken, operated average 4 hours a day, suddenly decides to display a thin pencil sized red line from the top of the screen straight down to the bottom,

Tried different channel, inputs, resolution, complete shutdown and restart..... Still, that thin red line taunts me..... Picture still watchable, but we all know, yes, the entire family all know that look hard enough and you can still spot the thin red line...

Ok! What's going on here, how do I rectify this issue, I live in a remote part of the continent, so suggesting take it to service centre ain't gonna cut it here......

I' m looking more for a piece of prestik and string solutions....,

Post away...l.

sorry to say... but it needs repairs.

plasmas are prone to this sort of thing, it's a component on the display board that has failed.

Thanks for that,it's gonna cost me an arm and a leg to send the beast away for repairs, as I sit here and type,I glance up and the thin red line starts to smirk back at me....

Anyone know if led screens are prone to this also?

might as well buy something else and use that one for games or something.

I had three LCD monitors do something similar so yes an LED LCD would be prone to it too. One had a thin yellow line down the middle, another had a pink one and the final one would have a blue one and then the screen would divide.

My 3 year old LG 42" LCD has just started doing this too, however the thin red line is only there after a cold start in the morning, and remains for around 15 minutes before disappearing again (until the next day  ).

In my case, the line starts appear as the beast screen starts up, but yes, I think it would be easier for me to dump the screen in my kids room or I could always build myself a braai bar and put the TV up there.... now if only the wife would allow......

I am also considering banishing KitKat(yes, that's what I've named it... the red line is reminiscent of the red tear strip on the KitKat wrapper :p) to another room in the house and replacing it with an LED. The inflated lcd/led tv prices of a few years ago have eased, so replacing it with a decent spec Samsung 40" or another LG 42" led shouldn't hurt too much.

Must admit that I'm not impressed that my 3 year old tv with a projected panel lifespan of 60k hours(per LG website) is acting up after 17k hours of use. Could have bought a NoName brand cheapie for half of what I spent.

When I researched the beast, I also weighed up between the Plasma and LED, I also researched the lifespan of these wonders, with figures of 80 000 -120 000 hours before pixels start to fade.... Well , three years and about 5487 hours of viewing time under the belt, I feel short changed....

Now I am worried that the same thing happens to LED TV;s , where does it all end, I have a CRT TV, no name brand, 18 years old, and that is still going like the first day I bought it.....

For what its worth last year I sold one of my LG 42 inch plasma's to a good buddy of mine and its working 100%. I bought it in 2008 :)

I know this because he stays down the street from me and I see the TV almost daily. Also his retired dad lives with them so the TV is on for a good part of the day :)

Lol. Don't fret Astro. Did a bit of googling. Doesn't seem to be a brand-specific problem.
To allay your fears, my model number is 42LF20FR... hope yours is different :p

Nope :)

LOL, not that worried.
TV has a nice dark room and never gets moved, also always on power saving (to bloody bright otherwise).
Anyway, if it breaks its a sign that it is to small.

Yeah I also researched and considered a Plasma at the time. Plasma had pluses over lcd as well as a lower price. Google returned forums with people rabbiting on about screen burn-in. Scared me off.

+1 wrt CRT. Have 2 collecting dust in the garage. Both still work. One of them a 15 year old LG. They're just too bulky to be in the house now, but will keep as a backup for when kitkat consumes it's last watt :D

It matters not, I hang my head, Mrs Mortymoose, has decreed that there will be no purchasing of new 42' Flat screens, as far as she and the offspring are concerned, a thin red pencil line going the length of the screen ain't an issue.....

I have now been banished to the bedroom to watch the Telly,

there is this guy in my office who just will not shut up.... waffle waffle waffle and I'm trying to type this...... SHUTUP!!!!!

sorry about that, i just had to type it seeing I could'nt shout out loud...

My daughter reckons that her teacher reckons, taking a magnet and dragging it down the length of the screen will fix it.....

Er, uhm! Anyone care to comment before dragging a chunk of rock along the screen?

Makro had a 47" LED for R5500... that was a really good deal...
I had something similar happen. Government refused to approve the procurement of a new TV. But I took unilateral action and went ahead with the purchase. (I told her it cost R1000 less due to end of range bla bla bla)... got yelled at by the government for a while... but then they eventually come around as soon as I plug a flash stick with Grey's Anatomy on for them to watch.
and The Bachelorette
and Two and a Half Men
and How I Met Your Mother
and Revenge
and Shameless

She eventually smiled...

hahaha! I share your feelings broer, Ministry of Finance says nay, but I am in retail and have just received latest pricelist from supplier, I already have orders for two screens, thinking I might mistakenly order three, she is also always asking me to source Greys and Private Practice.... so I have a bargaining chip..... lets see how far I can push this Aunty....
