Hey Everybody

Was wondering where can I get those plastic number plates, everybody has steel number plates these days. I don't like the look of steel number plates prefer plastic plates without the indentation of the licence plate numbers. Plus plastic doesn't vibrate as much cause I have sound.

Preferably in the germiston, edenvale, Bedfordview area.

Thanks

They don't make the plastic plates any more as far as I know. They only make the aluminium plates - suppose to be for their smart identification system or some sh*t like that.

And have to be bolted to the vehicle I believe.

Down in Cape Town we still get them in Perspex though. At least for bikes.

I believe the OP wants the plastic plates because the E-Toll cameras have issues reading them?

The cameras have no problem with plastic plates. Bolting or riveting only necessary if your car is a2010 model or newer. And I bought plastic plates last month. You just gotta ask.

I heard plastic plates were completely illegal and that you have to buy new metal ones.. I kinda thought the person was over reacting and left it.

Is it legal to have plastic plates on your car?

Nope. But I don't see them enforcing it any time soon. If you read the gazette that introduced them there are a whole lot of other requirements too - like RFID tags, green letters for personalised plates, etc. None of which are available at all.

There is a place in Wynberg. CT who will make you plastic plates. To get around the regulation, they call them "signs". I had one done on Monday as somebody ripped off the one from the front of my wife's car. I bolted it on with stainless steel screws

I don't give a **** about e-tolls, they will never get my money. I want a plastic plate because honestly it just looks better then the metal ones? So nobody knows where I can get one in my area?

Illegal?

I paid R60 for a set in Delft early in December.

I can also confirm the place still makes them since I was there on Saturday to have signage put on a vehicle.

Mate you're in CT, this is in GP. GP laws don't allow you to have metal plates. At least from what I can make out.

Unfortunately this is not so (got a car with them and it snaps pics as per normal) :( Those @$$h0lE$ can still read the plastic plates and steal our money:mad:

The chief executive of the South African Number Plate Association, Zurika Louw, explained that the current plastic and perspex plates being used in most provinces presented a security issue.

“You can buy perspex backing and place black or blue vinyl cut out letters on to it and it looks legit, it just doesn’t have the reflective cover.”
Louw said aluminium licence plates were much more difficult to duplicate.
The plates are made by South African Bureau of Standards-certified manufacturers, and sold to the embossers who place the digits on the plate.
“We must get rid of plastic plates, they aren’t secure. Gauteng implemented aluminium plates in November 2010 and the Government Gazette said all new plates must be aluminium. Plastic is supposed to be phased out by 1 November 2013.”

Linky

Ncalane said KwaZulu-Natal was the only province that did not have its own unique, branded style of number plate. The proposal could include the provision of the province’s logo on new plates.

Last time I checked, WC didn't have either.
