Playing games and sleeping at work

Each company will have their own Disciplinary Code with their own punishments in them, our for example have sleeping on duty as a FWW for the first offence and Dism for the second so, I wouldn't try it, you are still being paid to sit there and if you can surf the web then it is still better than drumming your fingers.

Why not read up on the latest developments in your field?

When one of your mates, or just some random that needs a joke to be played on them, falls asleep or passes out at a party.
What do you do?

Well to start you take a condom and slide it onto a pencil.
Here's where it gets a tad NSFW.
Slide the pencil condom up said friend's ass.
Carefully slide the pencil out leaving the condom in said friend's ass.
Place a R10 note in his hand and wait for him to wake up with a condom in his ass and a R10 note as payment :D

...out of boredom because there's absolutely nothing to do. Even after you've informed management you are asked to be patient as company is busy shuffling positions to be more effective.

What's the worst that could happen?

Since your not a security guard (or are you?) being caught sleeping on the job is not usually a dismissible offence but could lead to a final written warning.

Omg my boss is always either sleeping or playing games....
Always the "hold on let me finish this stage quickly then you can ask me".

Rather use the extra time studying or reading

Yup if you are a programmer, there is a big likelyhood that you dont know everything there is to know. Read up on newer techniques (e.g. SOLID principles or whatever else in your field of expertise). Try something new etc etc. Do some code katas.

Or it is likely that there are some shortcomings in the company's systems or products. Find and implement a solution for these problems.

Playing games and sleeping is TOTALLY unacceptable. The fact that you asked the question, already shows that your attitude towards the company AND YOURSELF is a problem. Oxygen thief... FFS use the paid free time to better yourself.....

Get the company to sponsor you a Lynda.com account and learn something new.

Learn a new skill. Make a random webpage. Do some documented research in your field that could be applicable to your job.

I've had some bad nights sleep that resulted in me taking an hour nap in the car around lunch time but sleeping in the office at your desk is generally a big no-no. Only exceptions I have heard of are if you are working on a big crises and team members are on site for hours on end and they take turns taking power naps in the lunch room or something. Gaming depends on policy. Most bosses at big companies would obviously not be happy with that but I have heard of exceptions. Some jobs have a large standby component to them (as in you are a fire extinguisher) and if there are no issues they don't care what you do provided you can drop it immediately to put out any fires that do crop up. I heard of a guy that was in that situation and he did game a lot from work. If there was an emergency though he would work for 36 hours straight sometimes.

The closest I had to this was a few years back at Std Bank. They had perhaps an hour or two's work for me each day and despite me begging for more there was none. I studied a bit but also read the full history of a few major web comics like User Friendly, Pearls before Swine, and Dilbert. Browsing the net seems a better option than actual gaming. Obviously if you can use the time productively to learn a new product or solve an existing issue it will make you look really good. There is always something to do I guess.
