i would like to see Sony fooling people into making them believe Blu-Ray's 20GB extra space advantage over HD-DVD will justify $500.
huh? what do you mean?

@arf The basic difference between Blu-ray and HD-DVD is that BR has a higher capacity.

As a video format it doesn't really matter that much as the .mp4 compression used by both can fit a HiDef Movie on the size of a normal DVD, ie the scapacity is not a limiting factor for HD-DVD movies. (Data's a different story)

The 360 is getting an HD-DVD drive attachment very soon, to answer the PS3's BR. Rumour up till today was that it'd cost about $100 so 360 premium+ HD-DVD = PS3 20Gb.

However, after Microsoft just announed that there won't be a 360 price cut this year, a new rumours popped up that the $400 premium will have the HD-DVD drive bundled for free. As I said, a rumour.

Ah, of course, the old X-Box HD-DVD drive for less than $200 story. *cough* bullsh!t *cough* No point in debating this kind of rumour, I think that the X-Box and PS3 will be able to compete on their merits without adding in conjecture. Here's a google challenge: Find a HD-DVD drive (hint: Toshiba and NEC make 'em), now find a price... now explain how Microsoft is going to sell it for $100.

Same way you get a $1000 BD player (Samsung & Sony, not available yet) squeezed, along with the Cell processor, a Hard drive, A high end graphics card, and 512Mb of really expensive RAM into a PS3 for only $500. Subsidize.

We've got nothing but conjecture at this point considering the PS3 is still not final hardware yet.

And just as a point of order :p I'm not anti Sony, I love some of their gear, (SE phones are the best) I'm anti-Arrogance, wool pulling, and generally anti-anti-customer behaviour. So far all Sony have told us is why PS3 is good for Sony. I frankly don't care who wins between the manufacturers, as long as the customers are getting the best deal.

Y'all got HDTV's yet? Coz till you do, why even worry about HD-DVD/BR?

Actually I picked up a 74cm 1080i CRT telly by accident :D The Samsung, only R5k.

Although I agree BC, the only thing HD would be useful for me for is onscreen Text.

sadly there is a catch with those CRT telly's Doobi, the 1080i is @ 50hz... which is only good for possible HD broadcasts in PAL.

all next-gen consoles run HD @ 60hz... but check your TV to be double sure. ;)

I wouldn't know where to start looking! It's a 100hz telly, but that's probably for 480. Even if it runs 720p I'll still be happy. As I said, the only time I notice the difference is Text (Can tell with PiP).

nope.. not the case. the next gen consoles will support 1080i/50 and 1080i/60

Where'd you get yer telly, Doob? I believe that the CRT HD TV's are superior to LCD in terms of dark colour contrast etc. R5k seems like a good price.

@Arf999 - nope, sorry but it only runs @ 60hz in HD mode. I have a Samsung which also supports 1080i @ 50hz and the X360 only works in 60hz.

The X360 works by the US HD spec it seems and not by the PAL HD standard.

sure you're not talking about this issue?

This is software, not hardware related AFAIK.

If the XBox doesn't support 1080i/50, then the HD support is broken. European HD (and prolly ours in future) is 720p or 1080i/50. Not a big issue with LCDs and Plasmas but for CRTs could conceivably cause a problem.

Next question: Why doesn't the Samsung support 60Hz? Surely it supports NTSC, so it cannot be a scanning frequency issue...

Doobi - 720p isnt possible on a CRT. they are either 480p or native @ 1080i @ 50hz.

@Arf9999 - The X360 is made as per US HD specifications so the PAL HD standard doesnt apply. The issue is only with CRT's and not with plasma or LCD screens. Any LCD has support for 60hz or above.

I wish Samsung would support 60hz but i think only their US models have that spec, PAL models as stated in your post are as per PAL requirements, which are 50hz. If HDTV channels will be present in SA they will be @50hz.

I find that odd, my telly specifically states support for 720p, and what about all the European CRT telly's, surely MS wouldn't alienate all of them?

I'd say Ms needs to patch the 360 rather than fixing the telly, considering it'd be easier to downgrade the output. Let's hope they do it for the ZA released 360 "Little birdies are saying something about September/October"

games also depend on the refresh rate of the telly by the way, a 60hz telly in 720p has to show the game @ 60fps.

1080i @ 50hz would show the games at a max of 25fps coz its interlaced, i dont think i would like to see a game running @ 25fps?

i dont think game companies would like to re-compile their SDKs to perform at lower frame rates due to Samsung's 50hz tellys. :(

an LCD seems to be the proper way to get 60hz all the way in HD.

besides, as a backup i have a VGA HD Adaptor which works very well on my 19" LCD @ 720p. :D

*sigh*, well with no HD sources availble, I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

yeah, I think you're right. It seems that the XBox HD support IS broken. For all its faults :D the PS3 will have FULL HD support (720p, 1080i, 1080p at 50Hz and 60Hz), as well as HDMI - if you're prepared to mortgage your home.

I'm a bit surprised at that samsung TV tho'. Seems a bit stupid to add such limited HD compatibility - then again, you did say it cost R5K ;).

@useless: I'm pretty sure you'll get a CRT that displays 720p. Games at 1080i? Yup, it is 25fps, but it is also 60% more resolution. Depends on on the game I 'spose.. very fast motion may be a problem (some minor motion blurring - but one shouldn't really compare screen fps to game fps. Screen fps is what is displayed, game fps is a performance measure (i.e rendering)). Best solution: 1080p...:D
