A nice, fresh thread on all the new rumours, speculations, and news for the upcoming PS6 (prob late 2027).

All the PS5 news can stay on the PS5 thread.

Go forth and post away :)

With the rampocalypse upon us, this early thread serves as a nice reminder to start putting away your R500 per month. :)

Just some current rumours sucked up by Grok:

Release Timing

  • Leaker KeplerL2 (known for hardware tips) has claimed the PS6 is “locked in” for a 2027 release, with engineering largely complete, TSMC production contracts for the custom APU signed, and GDDR7 supply agreements in place. Some reports suggest manufacturing could start mid-2027 for a holiday 2027 launch.
  • Counter-rumors and analyst views (including after Sony’s announcement of ending physical disc production for games in January 2028) suggest a later window of late 2028 or even 2029 is more realistic due to ongoing RAM/memory shortages and cost pressures. Sony executives have said the release date and pricing are not yet decided.

Specs and Performance

Recent claims from Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID), referencing alleged (older) internal AMD documents discussed on the Broken Silicon podcast, include:

  • Custom AMD APU (often called “Orion”) with Zen 6 CPU cores (up to ~10 cores in some reports) and RDNA 5 graphics.
  • Roughly 52–55 RDNA 5 Compute Units and ~640 GB/s memory bandwidth in one widely cited configuration.
  • Projected performance: over 2x the standard PS5 in some simulated setups (even with only modest increases in CUs/bandwidth), with broader claims of ~2.5–3x rasterization performance and 6–12x ray tracing vs. base PS5. AI features (frame generation, advanced upscaling similar to enhanced PSSR) are expected to help hit targets like stable 4K/120 fps.
  • Memory: GDDR7, with earlier leaks floating figures in the 24–40 GB range (exact amount still fluid due to costs).
  • Other notes: Full backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games is widely expected. Power targets have been discussed in the ~160W range in some older leaks. The GPU is described as RDNA 5-based but not necessarily the full desktop feature set.

These performance numbers come from simulations/projections and could change; real-world results at launch may differ.

Pricing and Costs

Manufacturing costs (bill of materials) have reportedly risen sharply due to memory shortages tied to AI demand. One claim put the BoM near ~$960 (up ~$200 in a short period), raising fears of a launch price approaching or exceeding $1,000. Sony has indicated it does not plan to heavily subsidize the next console the way it has in the past.

Other Rumors

  • A companion handheld (sometimes called “Canis” or similar) is frequently mentioned, potentially launching around the same time, with a lower-power AMD APU, substantial RAM (e.g., 24 GB LPDDR5X range in leaks), and dockable design. It is expected to play PS5 titles.
  • Design talk includes a potentially simpler/boxier form factor than the PS5 for cost and shipping reasons, with a detachable disc drive possible (especially given the shift toward digital).
  • Sony continues investing in next-gen platform development and has talked about experiences that go “beyond the living room.”

Important caveats: These are leaks and rumors from sources like KeplerL2 and MLID. Specs, timelines, and pricing can (and often do) shift. Sony has not officially announced the PS6 or confirmed any of the above. Memory market conditions remain a major variable that could force delays or design compromises.

Considering how few PS5 titles were released why even bother with a PS6?

I hear its digital only :D

Damn, like this?

I’m looking forward to it. I like my PS5 Pro and PSSR2 is fantastic but they really should’ve upgraded the CPU so stuff like GTA6 could be 60fps.

PS6 is exciting to me. The specs look great and I think they can go down to 24Gb memory to save some costs. I plan on grabbing one before it becomes even more unaffordable.

I'm actually going to slowly start getting rid of my discs, as I'm pretty sure the handheld and main console will only share games that are digital, but maybe I'm wrong

I remember back in early Steam days, claiming all my game codes online and taking the physical disc to Pawn shops :D

I hear its digital only :D

I have my doubts about this.

PS6 games all digital, sure. That’s how they’re making money to subsidize it to maybe $999.

But I think it will have an optional drive for the people with extensive PS4/PS5 disc collections.

I'm sure the price of the geystation 6 will be so high - Cheece and Chong won't even buy it.

Question is and always will be, are you going to spend R25K + on a console & R1500 on a digital game in the future ?

I see you also a "great purge survivor"
