Hi Guys.

Please could you help out a complete adsl nuub. I have read the sticky but i had some trouble understanding.

Im moving into a flat at the beginning of next year. I will have a room-mate living with me. We have decided to get an ADSL connection. We want to get 4mbps and a 2 gig cap. It is going to be used for mainly gaming (call of duty 4, wow and warcraft 3 ) and only the occassional checking of a webpage. Please can someone reccomend A) a service provider best suited to our needs. B) Give me a very rough estimate of how much it will cost - TOTAL COST, phone rental etc. There is a phone in the flat which can only receive calls - the phone rental will be paid for by my grandmother. C) can someone explain the difference between shaped and unshaped and which is better for gaming and price difference etc

Oh yes, need to add this on.

Need to try and make it as cheap as possible albeit a 4meg line.

For example is unshaped really neccessary for overseas wow - or can i manage without it.

lastly whats the best isp for gaming (lowest pings e.t.c.)

Shaped is what it says, the traffic is shaped. Unshaped is not shaped. HTTP and Email traffic takes priority on a Shaped line and other protocols like P2P do not get priority.

As for ISP's and who's best, look at this thread:

Pricing for lines, look at www.do.co.za and www.telkom.co.za we're not going to do it for you mate ;)

Don't sign a contract, take it month to month, I recommend you get at the very least a 3GB cap, especially from Telkom, since you will have 30GB local access after the Cap is reached.

As for a decent router, take a look at the Billion range of routers, they're my favourite, cost is anything from R500 and up.

Local is local, (not all .co.za sites, because some are hosted internationally) local access is access to sites or servers which is hosted in South Africa and not on an International Server in Europe or America for instance.

check out games.saix.net for local gaming servers and how to join, after you used the 3GB cap you can play on local servers, like I mentioned.

Get Telkom Do3 for R554

It has a 3GB cap and 30GB local

If you get capped, you can still play warcraft and call of duty online with the 30GB local cap
 
A one-year contract is not That bad and it's unshaped bandwidth. At least its not a 2 year Telkom contract. Some of my friends are going for this.
