PLEASE explain this to me?!?!?

Not sure if it's just me... But that ^ makes no sense  lol

What I meant to say is if you've set up the users accounts so that they have administrative privileges, and they're abusing that privilege, then revoke said privileges.

And then keep it revoked, no matter how much the user beg or plead.

Sorry, thats what i thought you were saying but wasn't too sure :P

Yea that's what i'm looking into doing now. But at the end of the day i would still like to find the source of how this has happened. Thanks for your suggestion :)

please type in msconfig and see which processes are running at start up.
Run pc in safemode via f8 and see if this changes.
If not please post hijack this log,i might help you with this

If, or "when" (Should i say) this happens again, I will post the required answers to this thread. Tnx

What is common between the sites?

- Windows7PRO x86
- Wireless Points run to same high site
- Monitoring Software for Cameras on-site is the same
- All link through to an off-site control room

All our sites are running pretty much the same setup (h/ware & s/ware).

Sounds very strange. Do you have other sites with the same setups that this isn't happening to? It definitely seems like something in common with those sites is causing it.

The info provided if pretty vague on this part so this may or may not be relevant,,, Also are you sure that it isn't just the association to .lnk files (shortcuts) that's been changed, because that would explain how it gives the appearance of changing the default program for multiply/all filetypes when infact it hasn't. IE try opening the files directly and not via shortcuts to see if that makes a difference.

If it is that .lnk files (shortcuts) have a messed up association getting it's default registry values and importing them may fix it. Either do a search for something like Windows 7 default .lnk registry or try the one provided on this page http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

Hi there.

There are about 12 other sites with the same setup, which have not had this problem... I did try opening Apps from the root instead of via a shortcut but i had the same issue.

I will look into the .lnk file link that you posted. thanks.

Hi there,

This is now the 4th time that this has happened and i have NO idea how the guys are doing it!

I will get into the office and one of my sites reports that the software wont run. So i log in there and EVERYTHING is set to run with Word. I mean EVERYTHING!

Usually it's Windows Media Player, but in this mornings instance, it's Microsoft Office Word. How do i set the Programs to go back to their normal startups and what or how are the guys doing this constantly? Grinds me SO much

Take that note with login and password that is stuck on the side of your monitor and throw it away and then change your password

Well until you find out what's causing it you could download all those registry entries and merge them together into one .reg file that way you'll only have to run 1 .reg file to restore all default file associations. Though the defaults probably aren't ideal as most have programs they're rather use and it doesn't help with non original extensions, but looking at those reg files will guide you to export any other extension's registry entries which you could also add to the reg file so they're also reset when you import it.

I'd suggest running some system info tool that lets you export lists of things like installed applications, then you could compare the lists of the problem machines to those that are working and hopefully find out or narrow down what could be causing it. Unless you get lucky with an internet search.

Also it might be worth looking into setting permissions in regedit on the parts of the registry that handle file associations, just like with folders, which should be able to deny access to them being modified basically locking them to what you want.

Edit....

Just a though, along the same line as the .lnk association being messed up, it might be an .exe association that's screwed with similar results. For example if .exe is set to open with something then anything that you open that's associated with an exe might end up pointing to this "something". So correcting just the .exe association may solve it if that's the case.

Doing a search for exe file association might help aswell. Here's one of the results http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505

ps here's an example of someone with that problem it seems.
