hi there
it seems i have screwed up my netbooks hard drive
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=3276218&posted=1#post3276218

it was pre installed with WIN home and i used win7 (usb) to delete the partitions to install new windows (it didnt want to install over win home) after deleting the part and making a new one ... well now still the windows dont want to install on the damn drive...

Question being, i have linux (backtrack 3) on usb is there a why a can accsess the drive in linux and re config the drive ( i think maybe the OEM lockt it somehow??)

please help

What does it doesn't want to install mean. There could be a number of reasons. Giving a generic statement doesn't help much. A detailed account of events will help determine what to lok for.

okay ...
i made a a booteble win7 usb drive, boot from it, choose install following the prompts... got to the stage where i had to choose on which drive i want it ( there was 3 part in one drive, c:/ being system, d:/ being primary and one with no letter saying EOM reserved EISA... so i choose delete part and then format for drive c:/... then went to say next, well nothing happed, only a msg on bottom saying windows could to install on that drive or something like that, so i got pissed of and deleted the bunch of partitions making one big lumb of unallocated space , so i choose make new partition and so it did, whent on to continue to clicking next...well guess what same out come ...msg stating windows cant install ...

That normally indicates that the drive is "dynamic", Windows cannot install onto a "dynamic" disk, only a basic disk. Use dispart.exe to trash and clean the partition.

yes i did that as well... clean /all then created new part and made it active... still same problem

new error with windows vista" windows could not determine if this comp contains a valid system volume"

Format it again, then try to install Windows 7 again. If that doesn't work, your hard drive is messed up or Windows 7 isn't compatible with your netbook. Follow a Win7 install tutorial for your netbook if that doesn't solve the problem.

...funny thing is winXp can format it and copy files to it but after every restart, i get a
"hal.dll" error

see thats the thing in xp if you wnat to install it formats rite?? in win7 if you click on the format option then you have to choose which drive rite? then click next? so when i click next i get error

Nicely install Linux and run Vista inside vBox.

You can boot a LiveCD from the USB drive and choose to recreate the partition.

Once you have it booted you can contact me and I'll walk you through on what to do.

Try Knoppix or Damn Small Linux.

thanks for all the advice....just spilled huge cup of coffe over damn thing...so now its in sy moer
