Please help me decide on a new car!

Hi fellas,

I know there have been lots of posts of people asking for assistance on what car to buy, but let me tell my situation and see what you suggest.

I'm willing to spend around R200k on a new car. I"m upgrading from my beloved 2003 1.3 Tazz. So I really am looking to feel the upgrade in all aspects - smooth drive, safety, interior, exterior. I've done a bit of research into what I can get for this price:

Hyundai 120
Looks cool but don't know much about it. Only seems to be available in a 1.4

VW Polo 1.6 Comfortline
I like this car. It has all the tech bits that I'm after and is attractive. There are so many on the road and I'm wondering if it's overpriced due to the South African perception of the VW brand? I've driven a friends 2007 Polo 1.4 and it drives really well. The Cross Polo looks great and it's an option as there's only about R15k difference in price to the 1.6 Comfortline, Any advice on this?

VW Golf 6 1.6 Tendline
I've been quoted a decent price on this model new. I'm guessing there's a new Golf being released in the next year or so and dealers are trying to get rid of these. Nice car though, but is the shape a tad dated and the technology old now?

Kia Rio
Don't ask me how, but I know a lot about the Kia brand and their cars. To be honest, they are nice but I'm not really interested in purchasing one.

Toyota Auris
These don't seem to be to popular on the road and I'm wondering why. Overpriced?? I'm a big Toyota fan but not sure about their offerings these days.

Can you guys recommend any 4x4 that fits within my budget?

you want some good advice -- keep your tazz....its good for atleast another 5 years.

I also have a 2003 1.3 Tazz and will be upgrading to a Honda Ballade Elegance. I suggest you take a look:

In the new car mag Imperial Honda have an ad saying they also offer extra 10k trade in assistance. I suggest you take a look at that as well.

Re the Honda Ballade - I'm not looking for a sedan - hatchback or 4x4. But thanks for the suggestion. May I ask how much you getting for your tazz without the additional R10k trade-in assistance?

Luckily I have a friend that wants it with my sound system for 30k.

Depends how many km you have on the clock.
 
Not a bad list of choices. Here are my opinions (disclaimer: these are only my opinions and are not necessarily true):

Hyundai i20
Pros: decent performance, decent interior, great value
Cons: Seats might be bit uncomfortable (apparently there is a support bar that can felt through the seats), only 2 airbags IIRC.

VW Polo Comfortline
Pros: good looker (except the rear), classy interior, good resale, decent performance
Cons: not cheap, possibly increased risk of theft/hijack

Kia Rio
I know less than nothing about this car.

Toyota Auris
Pros: being a toyota it will have good resale value
Cons: small, overpriced, bland looks.

Have you considered buying a 1 or 2 year old lowish mileage second hand?
 
How could i forget the golf!!!

VW Golf 6 1.6 Trendline
Pros: good resale, classy interior, decent space
Cons: a little bland in appearance

Edit: I've never owned any of the cars on the list so I can't comment on reliability or after sales issues.

The thing with Honda though is that you get a car that won't easily break down. If at all and from what I hear excellent after sales service. I'd say take it for a test drive at least.

Also the rear spolier and sports grill makes it look pretty awesome.

Thanks for the pros and cons. You didn't mention the Cross Polo though..?

I did consider a low-mileage second hand car, but after looking around and seeing what's available, I decided I wanted to buy a new car.

Yeah looks cool. But I'm stuck on the hatch-back idea (unless I can find a 4x4). Honda's make great cars and bikes. I love their bikes! But their sedan and hatch offerings don't interest me.

Same as the normal polo, only better looking. If I was to buy a polo, that's the one I would buy.
 
That Golf is a Trendline. I would take the Polo Comfortline over the Golf Trendline.

The Hyundai and Kia has the best maintenance/warranties which is a consideration. VW parts and service prices will probably be the highest in that list.
 
IMHO its also worth looking into pre-owned vehicles which are still under factory motor plan?

Thanks man. Always gotta consider the warranties and maintenance plans. I know that VW will be more pricey.

Nice! I'm not that lucky but my Tazz does have a rear spoiler, air-con, frontloader and is in pretty good condition for being 9 years old. It's mileage is about 105km.
 
Citroen C4? They have pretty good deals (30k discounts last I checked).
I went for a test drive in one, it's got everything you'd need and more, looks a good little car.

LOL. Admittedly citroen have very nice cars, but everytime I think of buying Citroen I just look here and sanity returns.
 
Friday between 19:00 and 21:00 702 has "A Word On Cars". Phone in and ask those guys which is the best option. They are clued up and will tell you exactly what are the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Well this is how I see it. If you have X to spend on a car, and find a pre-owned vehicle to the value of of 50% X, then the remaining 50% or a portion thereof can go toward a "service savings fund" to save up for the services. So you could buy a new Polo for R200K or a BMW 320d with 89000km with motorplan for R149k and save the balance (R4895 vs R3452 just for argument sake, leaving you R17316 a year for services etc.) And there are warranties available for practically all pre-owned cars...
