please help me exit WhatsApp group secretly

Is there a way to exit a WhatsApp group without other members realising I've left?

Our area has a WhatsApp group listing names, house numbers and cell numbers, supposedly so we can communicate in emergencies. I did not join the group and think I was added by a neighbour friend.

Turns out there are 45 members. It's bothering me that my details are so freely available and I'd like to exit the group without alienating the neighbours or seeming to be unfriendly.

I know I can hide myself but would prefer my phone number to be removed from the list.

They will see when your number leaves, but hopefully most of them won't even notice.
Who cares anyway, your right to privacy and freedom of association.
 
when this happened to me I changed the name of the group to "the most annoying thing ever"
posted a message saying this is not a chat forum it is supposed to be about security, then I left the group.

it took them 2 hours to change the name back (S.O stayed in the group)

as for your concerns, pic a random person you do not know and see how much info you can get through that group without sending a message.

after that you should feel a little less freaked out about the situation.
 
Tell the admin that you'd like to have your number changed to some random number then leave.

Gonna do the YingYang thing and ask admin to replace my number with the number of my second phone which I don't monitor closely. Hopefully my original cell number will fall away.

Did this last night and found the facebook page of one or two members :(

Admittedly the members in question might not have security concerns but I'm paranoid because everybody's out to get me :D
 
Reason why my whatsap number is not my actual telephone number that i use daily. I registered my whatsap using a data only sim which lives in a modem. I only give the number to a few trusted people that i actually need to chat with. Personally i think the old BBM way of inviting by pin is the best, one won't have these random problems. I doubt you will be able to leave that group discreetly

I would stay in the group.

One of my parents in law's neighbours daughter was home alone.

She noticed someone in the yard and all she did was type "help" into the group.

Her house was surrounded before the guy even started trying to break in.
Caught red handed with a garden fork to security bars.
He jumped the wall to the neighbours yard to try and get away.
Caught there by 5 of the neighbours.
 
Yes, there are definite benefits to staying in the group, just envisaging the amount of spam and number of cold calls to expect if somebody chooses to distribute the list -a data harvester's delight.

It makes sense to leave the group and re-join with another number.

And the number will remain too.

I would suggest he alter his Whatsapp profile so that only his first name appears when everyone else looks at the list.

However in an emergency how will they know who and where the problem is?

You can change the icon too. Must be a flaw.
