Please help me setup my Telkom ADSL

So I recently moved house and got a new ADSL line through Telkom (they are also my ISP). The guy who installed the line was hopeless. He laid the cable, plugged in the router and said "everything is working", and left.

I have been trying to get hold of someone at Telkom on 10210 for the past 2 hours with no luck

I am unable to get everything up and running myself, and I can't find anything online to help me. I have a number of questions.

First up. I got an SMS from telkom with a username and password, something like [email protected] and a password. What is this for? For the Telkom website? For the ADSL user account? If it's for my ADSL, how to I get to some sort of login screen?

Next, I created an account on the telkom website. It says I can link my Telkom account so I can pay online. It asks for my Telkom phone number (which I have) and my account number (which I don't have). It says I can get my account number on a telkom bill. I obviously haven't received a bill because it's a new line and they haven't sent me anything notifying me of my account number. Where can I get this from? (10210 is not the answer I'm looking for here as it's impossible to speak to a human)

Lastly, please advise on any steps I might need to do. I completed an ADSL verification form but I have no idea if that is actually working

Please help! I can't find anything online and this is driving me crazy
 
Hi,

Did you receive a CD with your modem (should be in the box). Pop it in and follow the instructions. If you did not get a CD you will have to do the setup via your web browser :)
 
You can do the CD thing but I'd suggest skipping it rather. Its extra stuff on your PC and its not needed to set up the router. Than being said - it can be easier if you're unsure (I think?...never did the CD thing).

If you want to try without:

Open your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet explorer, Opera...whatever). Type in this address at the top:

10.0.0.2

(Alternatively 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 depending on model)

That should give you a login for the router...username is admin and password should be written on bottom of router or somewhere in the paper stuff...probably also "admin". You should change this password to something more unique. The exact look will differ depending on model but you need to find the screen where you put the ADSL info in, but here is mine for reference: (note the 8/35...that you need to change too)

Web browser for me personally is easier :) Mentioned the CD route as its generally easier for someone doing the setup for the first time (not for everyone, but for some).

to login to the adsl modem.

the username and password that was sms'd to you needs to be set into the modem to give it access to the internet.

currently it will be set as the guest account.

there should be a wizard follow those steps or set up manually if you find that step.

If the line was installed the line will already be verified. Just get the username and password programmed into the router remember to select pppoe.

If you paid for an install, the technician would have tested it with his laptop, and not your PC.

Assuming the router is working, how are you connecting to it from your PC?
