Hi guys,

I need your help please. They stole our Telkom cables in Honeydew for the second time in 6 months. Telkom says they dont have stock and so have no idea when they will replace them.

So for more than a week most of the suburb has no telephones nor ADSL. After sitting around with no connectivity I decided to link my laptop to my phone via bluetooth. So at least now I can connect to the net.

The problem is that becuase I dont want to buy a long term contract and data bundle, it is costing me R2000 a gig (from Cell C).

So today I went out and bought a Virgin SIM card and R50 airtime - Now it will cost me R500 a gig.

At these prices, I am not able to even search these forums for the answer.

Please can someone do me a favour and do a search on the forums and give me the answer to my question: What is the cheapest short-term option for internet access. Obviously, I do not want to run out and buy a R3000 modem, nor sign up for large bundles, nor sign a two year contract. all I need is something to get me through maybe a month (oh please let them replace the cables sooner) etc etc

I have a laptop with bluetooth. I have cell phone with bluetooth, and it has HSCSD and GSM. i dont think it can do 3G or edge. It is a Nokia 6300.

What are my options? Geez I have used 10 megs already - R20 to type this. Ok gotta go...cant afford to be online.

Put a Vodacom or MTN sim in your phone and load a prepaid data bundle. R189 for 500MB, R289 for 1GB, R389 for 2GB.

Thanks Syndyre. I didnt know about prepaid bundles. I presume, because it is prepaid, it carries over each month till it is used up.

btw: to buy a prepaid Sim card now requires identification and forms and all kinds of registration. gone are the days of picking up a starter pack at the check out counter.

No its only valid for 30 days. Really? Bought one a few weeks ago without any hassles like that.

No - bought several Vodacom 4U starter packs at PnP recently.

No identification were required.
