Hi,

So I went and bought a new psu (coolermaster gx650) in preparation for getting a new gpu.
I unplugged the old one and then removed and proceeded to install the new one oh and I also reapplied thermal paste on my cpu, but I as soon as I turned it on it made a loud sound then tripped my houses DB board.

What now? I am KAK scared to try and turn it on.

What do you think it is bad psu or bad installation

Please help ASAP

Disconnect the PSU from everything and plug it back, if it trips again the PSU is faulty. Also reconnect your old PSU to be sure your RIG hasn't suffered any damage. As long a long as you haven't damaged the PSU in any way due to user error the shops you bought it from should replace it for you for free.

If it fried your RIG, thing may become a bit more complicated as no one will want to be held accountable for the issue. Let us know what has happened as soon as you have tried the above.

Rather just upload the image to like www.imagehost.co.za (it's not hosted locally, but at least it works).

Also, what made the loud sound? Was it coming from the motherboard's buzzer/case speaker?

Your CM GX650 PSU apparently has SCP (Short Circuit Protection), so your components should be safe, unless your previous PSU damaged it due to no SCP.

My suggestion would be that you start by plugging in only the 20+4 PIN motherboard connection, and remove your graphics card from the motherboard. Don't plug in any other power connectors. Then try switching on the PC again.

You might need to plug in the 2x 4-pin (or with your motherboard it might only be 1x 4-pin) CPU connector. Just make 100% sure from the motherboard & PSU manuals that you're plugging in the correct connector.

I ok so all I have done now is remove it, so what should I do first re install or try old psu? The sound came from the psu and some smoke, thats why i am really scared to reinstall it again.

Thanks

Then it's probably dead.

Try plugging it into the mains to see what happens. If nothing happens you can then connect main power cable & cpu power cable to the motherboard and see if it powers on.

@Ponder,
When you plug in the PSU just to the mains, then you won't be able to test it, unless you hotwire the correct 2 pins on the 20+4-pin PSU connector.

@Atheist:
From the pictures that you posted, I can't see anything wrong with the cabling.

If your PSU went up in smoke, then it's probably dead like ponder said and you should return it. I would suggest that you try and swap it out for an Antec HCG520 (which is cheaper). The HCG520 should be able to run any single GPU.
Btw, what graphics card are you going to test?

Did your previous PSU work correctly with the same setup?

and this time, put the switch on the back from 110v to 220v.

Ok so I plugged it into the mains and nothing happened so I hooked it up to the motherboard connector and cpu connector and tired to turn it on but nothing happened, so im guessing its dead?
and yes my old psu did work on the same setup, Im upgrading for a new gpu

Anyways, yes I'd also take a guess that the PSU is dead. if you want to try hotwire it to see if it still works I can help you out.. Or you can google it.. It's quite easy. Than all you do is just have one fan connected to it.

Make sure your PSU is off and not connected to the mains.
The Looking at the PSU 20/24 pin connector look hold it so that the clip is on the left hand side and you are looking at the open connectors. There should be a green cable (or some times grey) on the left 4th from the bottom.

You need to now short this cable using a piece or wire or paperclip with any of the black ones.. just use the black one below it or above it.

Now plug the fan in and the power on the PSU at the mains. See if the lights trip or more smoke appears.

Yes usually the case but just the other day I had PSU that would trip the mains breaker just by connecting the power cord even though the rear switch was 'off'. Fortunately this PSU was fine after cleaning the moist (humidity) dust across the internal terminals out. Yeah Durbs is humid :D

Slightly off-topic.

Lift the top drive one slot up. Give them some space to breathe..

I'm no expert. This happened to me some years back. I forget what make and model of PSU I had changed. No damage to the mb or drives. Even if you short all the secondaries, it must not get burnt. This may sound funny, but I've read this in some electronics books and heard this from friends. Pick up the PSU, and smell at the air vents. If there is a bad odour, then, the Primary on the tranformer is blown, an indication of a power surge at your home, or most likely, they sold you a returned unit. Nothing smells as bad as a burnt transformer. Did you buy it online and where? No one can prove a power surge, and this is what I say, it now has burn marks on it and it's not even your fault, and taking back, is going to be tough. Let us know if they take it back, they sold you a faulty unit.

It's been a long time since I saw a transformer inside a switched mode PSU.

The thing is I bought it off a guy from carbonite (it was still sealed) So its going to be tough. But I am going to try claim from warranty which I check and its valid till 2016, but the worst thing is there doesn't seem to be any coolermaster offices in SA. I got my Rig and and running again so my hardware is still working.

A BIG thanks to all the guys that helped me when I was in a state of MAJOR panic.

I knew there was something faulty with what I said ! Forgive, I don't want to pretend that I know stuff, I'm eager to see if the company takes it back, it's their fault. In my case there was something that smelled bad like a burnt tranformer in the PSU my close friend had given me, but I stand corrected. Thank you.

You'll have to start off by getting the proof-of-payment/purchase from the guy on Carbonite so that you can return it to the retail shop where he got it from.

ANyways, good luck with your problem.

Thanks, let the games begin I guess :erm:

No worries, a lot of electronics that go 'pop' smell the same. Once you let the smoke out they no longer work :D
