Please help the newbie with very basic advice - PS3, XBOX 360 and PC networking.

I really don't know much about routers and other networking stuff, and could really use some advice please!

So basically, I have an adsl line in the study and about 30m away or so in the lounge I have an Xbox360, PS3 and Sony Bravia which I want to all be able to connect to the internet. My computer is in the study and also must connect to the net (obviously

).

Would the best thing to do be to run a normal telephone cable extension to where the tv and everything else is, plug the modem in there and connect the three components right there and then run a long ethernet cable (I think thats what its called) from the modem to the computer in the study?

That would be the simplest solution, otherwise you'll have to take three Ethernet cables from your lounge to the study. Alternatively you can keep the modem in the study and connect the PC to it, and take a single Ethernet cable to a switch in the lounge.

I'd use the first solution.

Do you have any wireless devices, and is your router wireless enabled? You could bridge your connection to the lounge with a second router if they're both wireless (or wired, but that leaves unsightly cables running down the passage...)

I wouldn't recommend that you 'extend' the ADSL wall socket into the lounge with a telephone cable since this may degrade the quality of your connection; however it beats running 3 ethernet cables to the lounge.

Just get a wireless access point and connect via the built in WDS...think that's what it's called...or get a access point and just run 1 cable to it...you can then extend from there.

what is your budget?

you can go for ethernet over power modem to but that will prob cost 1500*3....

or just buy the wireless adapter for the xbox...R650 the new models have built in.
not sure about the ps3..think it has built in.

Wireless would be the easiest solution, but depending on how many walls you have between the study and the lounge, you may need a repeater or something.
If wireless is not an option, maybe run one network cable through the ceiling to the lounge, down to the PS3/360 and get a switch to connect to both consoles (and tv).

The one problem you might run into is if you want to stream HD content to your TV from your PC. Not fast enough over wifi.
