Hi there,

Got a Seagate 500GB SATA II Hard drive, just under a year old, mysteriously not working

Switched my PC on in the morning after doing absolutely nothing to it, and my hard drive isn't recognized in Windows or in BIOS.

Put it into my mates PC and it wasn't recognized in BIOS either, and when he goes into loading screen his PC freezes (only with my hard drive in).

Anything I can do?

Cheers,
Stephen

Does it start up when you switch on your pc? Touch it and feel.

Same thing happened to me, I just wiggled the cables a lot and now it works again. :p

hard drive definitely starts up, bios takes like 30 seconds longer to boot when its plugged in and then goes into windows (installed on my other HD)

Post edited.

It says on the sticker on the drive.

Some are solid, there were a few bad batches though... I've heard 40% failure rate.

k its definitely the 7200.11 im really confused and got no int cap sigh

Yes it does it is the ST3500320AS. please guide me from here postman im trying to trawl through the post you linked aswell !

gotta go to bed now, will check again 6AM.

I don't really care about the data, is there any chance of me ever getting this HD into working condition again? even my bios won't recognize it sigh

!!WARNING!!
If the firmware upgrade installation instructions are not followed properly the firmware upgrade could be data destructive and/or render your hard drive inoperable. As Seagate does not warrant the data on your drive, in addition to regular back-ups, if possible, your data should be backed up before upgrading the drive firmware. Additional information on backing-up the contents of your drive can be found at www.seagate.com. Though this firmware upgrade to your product is a change to the product the terms and conditions of your Seagate warranty for the product will remain effective to its normal expiration. For other warranties on your product please consult the warranty documentation provided by your supplier.

dude thank you so much will try this asap and get back to you

once again you have saved me <3 really appreciated man

I suspect the normal Firmware upgrade is to late for him as his drive is not seen by the BIOS. In order to flash the firmware the BIOS has to see the drive.

If you don't care about the data then just return the drive for a new one. It's got a 3yr warranty. When you get a new one make sure to flash the firmware if it's not already up to date.

Darn. :(

At least it should get swapped with the new 7200.12 500GB (hopefully - I've only returned one 7200.11 500GB).

That will not work if the bios does not detect the drive, take it back get it replaced with something else and not the same model.

sorry to tell you this but your hdd and info is gone. I have had 2 1tb drives do exactly the same thing and there is nothing that can be done, even having done the firmware update the last one failed.

Take it back get it replace with new stock only!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear man , the same thing happened to me also. But if you are willing to spend around R2k or so, you will get your data recovered. Otherwise, just don't get a 7200.11 Seagate again!

Good luck!

after reading this I'm not even going go try, hope its under 1 year old
