you will need a modem so that the laptop connects to it via wifi , if ur new u could test out neotel if ur in jhb

is wireless not same as wifi. My laptop has wireless. can i conect to any netwrokwith just that.

Which internet connection do you use? ADSL? If it's ADSL, all you need is a wifi (wireless) router and you connect to it with your laptop, but if you're not moving around much, cable connection is faster.

Your posts are so confusing I want to cry... :(

I have telkom adsl. I justgot a new laptop which has wireless lan in it. I thought you could just connect to say, iburst or any other wireless isp with a wireless laptop but i wasnt sure if you need an external wifi modem.

you know like hp wirless assistant on laptops, what is that for.

Why would you want to connect to a wireless service provider if you have ADSL?

Like I said, you need a wireless router, which is connected to ADSL and then you connect wirelessly to the router. Wireless connection is just another form of a LAN (local area network), it's just wireless.

So you actually want to pay Telkom, Iburst and or a WISP, that's great, you're loaded, can I send you my banking details? I'll blow air bubbles to you and that way you think you're connected :p ;) :D

Iburst operates on a wireless signal, but you need their modem and a contract with them to connect to them.
MTN/Vodacom operate wireless modems, you need their modems and contracts with them to connect.
A wisp like Jawug in Joburg operate wireless networks but you need equipment from them to connect to them.

If someone has an open wireless network and you have a wireless card that can pick up a signal you can use it.

Your lan card connects to a wireless router which needs an internet input adsl or as above

exactly what he said

You need to connect to a wireless access point before you can gain access to a network. For commercial services, this is usually done via a modem/router.

A wireless card on your laptop simply means that instead of connecting via a wired Ethernet cable, you also have the ability to connect to a network wirelessly. In effect, it's simply a wireless Ethernet connection.

thanks guys, info much appreciated. (except Teraside, i think he works for the devilcom

Lol, no, I'm tired of n00bs asking the same questions over and over, if you took 1 day to google or read a bit more on the subjects you are talking about, then you would've known. If you read what I said in the first few posts, you would have known as well, since everyone repeated what I said.
