I know you've all heard this a million times but I can't find the solution so maybe one of you will PLEASE Help me with this... DSL and Cable aren't available in my location aka BFE... The ATT guy said we could possibly have it in 5 to 10 years :( So I know i have the option of satellite, but I want to be able to play on the PS3 network, games like Call of Duty 4... because of the Latency issues, this isn't acceptable. Alright so now you know the reason...

I have a friend (A) with DSL (on another phone provider) approx. 2 miles from my house. It's not the greatest DSL service, but better than nothing. Then there's another friend (B) approx. 8-10 miles with exceptional DSL speeds around 6mbs.

I would like to know
1. Is it possible to wirelessly connect to friend (b)'s house?
2. If not what about friend (A)?

Please be very descriptive on how i can acheive this.. Any help is greatly appreciated...:)

Yes you can connect wirelessly, you need special long range equipment though, check here: http://www.wug.za.net/
Also I don't think it's possible to get 6mbs in SA, are you in another country?

First off welcome, second - this is a forum for south african internet users :P , third guys the clue was he said my provider is AT&T and his friend has a seperate provider :P

Yeah wifi is possible depending on distance and line of site among other things, what kind of distance etc, what hardware do you have, router/antenna/nic wise.

Well lets help the guy out. Pull out the chainsaw and try get clearer line of sight between you and your buddy. This also depends how much money you prepared to spend.

6 miles. Thats 9.6km. Hmmm dude.

You could use smoke signals??Plugging a modem in at the fire might be difficult.

Seriously. This is possible but lots of them $$$ will be necessary. If you give us your location it will be possible to find any narrowband-long distance suppliers in your area. Or you could just google it yourself :P

An alternative(I would choose) would be to pester your local ATT branch. Make them believe that it would be in their best interest to have your DSL line work correctly. There is nothing more annoying than an internet brat wanting his 1337 connection to work. Besides the infrastructure is there, it probably just needs to be repaired.

hey guys, i had no idea this was a south america forum, sorry about that... I appreciate all the info you have given me. I called dish network today and ordered wild blue satellite internet. I hated to do it, but i've called att, sprint, even the power company (asking about BPL, broadband over the power lines) i had never heard of this, and neither has my power company. So basically it looks like satellite is my 1 and only option for anything over 56k... :( It just really sucks because I just moved from a place where I had cable internet at around 5mbps. I guess that's a price you pay when you move out to the country.... once again i really appreciate all of your advice and help. See ya later

i'd go for point-2-point wireless...(wds setup):

2x19dbi grids , 2x linksys wrt54gl (due to the basic level of setup) and all the cables (lmr400+correct converters+poe)

imho you cannot do gaming on satellite - be it 1 (with 56k/gprs) or bi-directional. you are gonna get latencies of 700ms-1300ms.

yeah i know i'm gonna be out of luck because of the latency issue, but all that stuff you told me how to do is way beyond my skill level. atleast i'll be able to browse the web fast (compared to dial up)... I can still play some games online, just not real time ones, which is the ones i wanna play.

South Africa, wow i need to read a little slower.. So how is it on the other side of the world?

Well everything is just dandy. We rugby world champs. Ummm ye nothing else matters much....

Jokes aside,we fine and cant complain.

Yourself?

congrats on the rugby... Not very popular sport here, except for rich preppy schools. Yeah everything's ok here, except this internet situation. Wild Blue installer is coming in the morning... After reading some of the customer responses i'm really crossing my fingers and hoping this goes well. I bought me a wireless router yesterday so i can get online with my ps3. i know i'm probably not going to be able to play many games but atleast i can update it and browse around a little on it...
