I need to backup some family home movie DVD's (of my kids, not blue movies) . What is the best software to use which will make a good quality mkv that can be playable via my Plex server?

Can your Plex server play WebM ?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Will play around with them tomorrow at the office.

Don't let your wife catch you..

She is the one nagging me to get the DVD's onto Plex. Oh, and she is in the office next to me and can see all my monitors all day so ya, too late for your advice...

So I definitely won't be playing with "them" at work...

MakeMKV is my go to. If speed and quality is more important than space then it's the perfect solution.

From official support, it's clearly that Plex can direct play video in the following formats:
1. MP4 container
Video Encoding: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), mpeg4, VC-1
Audio Encoding: AAC, AC3, EAC3, MP3

2. MKV container
Video Encoding: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), mpeg4, VC-1
Audio Encoding: AAC, AC3, ALAC, FLAC, MP3

MakeMKV is a nice choice to rip your home DVD to MKV format. But HandBrake owns more outputs and supports HEVC well. Many other mainstream free DVD ripper can also help you finish the job with clearer UI, like WinX DVD Ripper and Freemake Video Converter.... Just choose what suits you most:p

If you haven't decided yet on the mkv format, I suggest H.264 unless your PC is fully capable of decoding H.265 (HEVC) in hardware. Skylake (gen6) CPU is the first CPU with hardware H.265 decoding. CPU usage on i3 6th gen is very high (around 30% with hardware decoding option disabled) when playing 1080p 24fps 8-bit H.265 file, so anything less than Skylake sans GPU will be heavy on CPU usage. On the other side compression advantage of H.265 format is not so evident as advertised, so I think it is not worth go with H.265 unless you have special needs.

Thanks, I agree with you. Plex is running on a HP Microserver n54l which doesn't handle H.265 decoding so I will avoid.

DVDFab back in the days, haven't done any ripping in yonks tho..
