CSE 190 M: Web Programming, Summer 2010

Error

We have chosen to restrict our CSE 190 M course web site so that it refuses to display itself in Internet Explorer ("IE"). We're sorry. Please visit our site using another web browser, such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or Opera.
Why won't you allow me to view the course web site in IE?

I originally posted a lengthy explanation about why I disapprove of Internet Explorer, but I was asked to remove it. If you are curious, you can read it on my personal (non-UW) web site at martystepp.com. Please note that any content posted on martystepp.com reflects the personal opinions of Marty Stepp and not of UW or the CSE Department.

Figures a lecturer in Web Programming would tell you not to use IE! :D

I love it!!! especially seeing that a lot of SA sites program for IE only.

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage - so now how am I supposed to take this "lecturer" seriously when his own domain is down?

Bit silly IMO. I say let IE render it, errors and all. Anyway it's IE 6 that gives the most headaches to developers. 7 not so much. IE 9 is actually a technically impressive browser.

It isn't down if you use Safari.

I think this was his first lesson and some of you failed ;)

So your web sites are going to block 100,000,000 potential users? Great business m odel. After his course you'll be in great demand.

If you used standards based code no one will be blocked. I think you missed the whole point.

Good one.

Sadly, there are websites that force you to use IE:
"Sorry, you require to use Internet Explorer in order to access our website."

At least in this case I can press this key combination: F6, CTRL+C, WIN+R, iexplore, F6, CTRL+V, ENTER.
Good thing every Windows PC has IE preinstalled... But what about Macs? And Linux?

His web page renders very fast with Google Chrome 9 beta. :D

I'm itching to try Chrome 10 dev.

It's not actually such a big number. The target market for this course likely wouldn't be using IE so he's really excluding a very small %.
