On an unrelated note, where can you buy a chromebook in SA?

I use Linux Mint, but won't mind giving chromebook a try
I would also like to know this.

The reason people are looking at Chromebooks is because they don't want to use Windows. There are reasons for that, but I will not mention them.

I need to rewrite my blog post to read that Chromebooks are being considered as an alternative to Ms Windows.

ms has created jobs for thousands of people world wide with the software that they make and their role in computing cannot be ignored or denied.

I have to dual boot Windows xp to use Corel Draw, I do not hate Windows, but cannot deny that my netbook performs better when running Linux. Even my battery life is better.

It performs better so does my Linux mint system.

But when it comes down to it windows is far superior due to market capital.

Every person who worked on a computer can use windows.

The same cannot be said for linux etc.

But this is off topic and a different thread entirely

Rubbish.

Agreed. So why even put post it in this thread then?

Because it was relevant to the initial post on his blog.

That is all as this is not a linux vs windows thread and the reason why I am not going to argue with you.

:)

Welcome to South Africa where the internet isn't... So Where's the proof SA schools are using Chrome books now?
Common misconception that you need internet to operate a chromebook which is completely not true

Where can you even buy a Chromebook in South Africa?
Bidorbuy or I think Samsung also have Chromebooks on show at their stores though that was probably before they pulled out of SA.

Proof Chrome books are getting popular in schools? I know back in school Office and Windows was free from MS so I don't know why schools would opt for Linux.

I'm not sure where to place you. Pro-windows or anti-android...

Well, I appreciate everyone's opinion here.

I am trying to promote Linux and especially the distro that I use. We all have a personal bias, as we all have a favourite.

My experience with computers at school was slow outdated machines, battling to run Windows. With networks that had frequent downtime due to viruses. This might not be your experience, but I find each child having a Windows laptop for use during school hours scary.

But, I still use Windows at work all day (the company software only runs on Windows) so ja, Windows = necessary evil. Or just necessary if you don't think they are evil ;)

I have edited the article and added more Microsoft bias, this time with reasons.

Not to leave anyone out I have added Mac bias as well, so they can also feel the love.

I have felt inspired by everyone's comments here. Thank you for pushing me, I would never have edited the article if not for this forum.

Just curious what is your opinion on your current distro vs Mint.

Reason for asking obviously I am use to windows as I grew up with it from Ms-Dos till where they arw now.

But I recently ventured into Linux and Mint was the first one I tried and I really like it, but would like to know if there are better ones as my knowledge on linux is vague.

Hi Thor, I have limited experience with Mint. I have always liked it more than Ubuntu. Both Mint and Peppermint are Ubuntu derivatives, so they software you are running now would work on it. Cinnamon was a bit intensive for my netbook to run. Mint is a good distro. Which desktop environment do you use?

Peppermint uses lxde, which has less effects and is optimised for speed rather than looks. I tried Mate a while back, and felt very nostalgic using it. I don't like Unity, although I am getting used to Docky. I also love Conky.

Mint would probably be my second choice if Peppermint ever stopped.

Peppermint 5 uses less than 120 mb of ram after booting up, so it really is lightweight.

The lead Peppermint developer used to be a Mint developer.

What works for you depends on what hardware you are running and what you need it for.

My best advice is to create a live cd or flash drive, boot into it and test it.
