Hi all you Linux people, I need your help.

I have started blogging again and I have a poll going. I want your input as to which OS you prefer for personal / student use. This comes as Chromebooks are gaining popularity in SA schools. I have a preference, and I would really love if we could get schools using Linux instead. A lightweight platform (like Peppermint Linux) would (in my mind) be a better option than a Chromebook.

It would have to be a distro that had a support package, as schools will need a lot of help implementing and rolling out a new platform.

Vote and have your say. This might not change the world, but at least it is a starting point. Who knows what happens from here.

So go to http://myiceadventure.blogspot.com and vote.

The poll is near the top right hand side of the page.

Proof Chrome books are getting popular in schools? I know back in school Office and Windows was free from MS so I don't know why schools would opt for Linux.

Chromebooks use Google Drive, Docs and Sheets. Which are also free ;)

Welcome to South Africa where the internet isn't... So Where's the proof SA schools are using Chrome books now?

Certain schools in the East London area are planning to go over to Chromebooks, instead of the iPads that they are currently using. It is early days and has not been implemented yet.

I also think that cloud based is not the way to go (yet) in SA. Internet is way too expensive.

So if it's not implemented yet how is it gaining popularity?

Hmm, not much of a choice of linux flavours there and no RedHat derivatives on offer so I'll pass.

From your blog:

" Windows 8.1 is unreliable"

Please explain the above statement.

If you want this blog of yours to be a thing you will need to substantiate your findings/opinions. Else you'll have no credibility other than being a Linux fanboy.

I agree with your comments.

Windows 8.1 in my experience does not run well on entry level Celeron laptops, I have friends who are pc gamers who have gone back to Windows 7 as they had terrible performance running Windows 8.1

I have a friend with a R25 000 dell laptop, that runs Windows 8.1 badly and is slow.

Every other day I hear people wanting to buy laptops or desktop running Windows 7, instead of 8.1

I am not saying that Windows 8.1 is rubbish, I am saying that if people want to use Chrome OS they should try Linux first.

I will try to edit my blog post asap to reflect that.

What would you like me to add to the poll?
1) A Gnome 3 RedHat based distro - I'd opt for CentOS 7 Live for stability and long term support (Gnome 3 runs well on Ubuntu now as well).

2) Don't knock Windows, early days yet but I suspect Windows 10 will be a winner.

+1

Personally I find Windows 8.1 to be very light and have it running comfortably on an Atom so I can't see why it would struggle on a Celeron - unless we are talking about the original P3 Celerons :)

Mmmm I don't really agree since my experience is exactly the opposite and I was the biggest Windows 7 fanboy here. And Afrihost Fanboy :)

With that said, all in all not a bad blog I will refer peeps, but keep it to the point windows has nothing to do here but yet on your blog you bad mouth it.

See my point ?

On an unrelated note, where can you buy a chromebook in SA?

I use Linux Mint, but won't mind giving chromebook a try
