Plex/Networking issue.Only Can't find server over powerline or on another router.

I need some help from networking guru's please.

I have a Telkom Huawei HG532F router as my main access to my adsl line because it gives of quite decent wifi performance in the 2,4ghz range and is very stable and fast on my adsl line compared to other routers I own.

I use Plex for my media needs,my laptop is my server.If both my client plex device and server are on the HG532F then everything works fine.

The problem comes in when I use a Tp link wifi powerline adaptor(cloned SSID/password) to send signal upstairs then a client from upstairs finds the server which is upstairs just fine,but if the server is upstairs and client downstairs then I can't get Plex to find the server.

I've since tried using my TP link d7 ac1750 router connected to the huawei via lan and if the client is on the huawei 2,4ghz channel and the server is on the tp link d7 then again I can't find the server.

Any help will be appreciated,although my ideal setup needs to be with the wifi powerline adaptor because otherwise there isn't sufficient wifi signal upstairs and running cables isn't an option.

Shot in the dark. Subnet?

can you access plex via your browser? localhost:32400 ?

Hmm, odd... If the android device is on the same network then you should be able to see plex.

Can she maybe go into the network settings in Plex? It should give her the public and local IP.
 
Ok so here's where im at right now, for some odd reason if server is upstairs and client upstairs with the tp link wifi then its not finding the server via the plex app or localhost:32400.

However I brought both server and client downstairs and now it's finding the server if they are both connected to the huawei via the plex app and plays media just fine, however when I type localhost:32400 in chrome on my client device browser it says site not found.

Firstly I think the OP meant to test using http://<ip of Plex server>:32400/ from your devices. Localhost would only work on the Plex Media Server itself.

Please explain how your network is currently configured as it is unclear to me how many "routing" devices you are running. Your main router is the Telkom Huawei router downstairs connected to the Internet via ADSL?

You have a HomePlug adaptor connected to one of the LAN switch ports on the Telkom router and plugged into the wall socket. What HomePlug device is that?

Upstairs you have a TP-Link HomePlug device with built-in Wireless AP correct? A range extender of sorts? What model is it and are you sure its not doing routing/NAT?

It sounds like the issue you're having is that upstairs can access out to the Internet but you can't access from downstairs to upstairs which implies a form of firewall/NAT. I picture it like this:

Upstairs Wifi -> firewall/router -> PowerLine -> Telkom router -> ADSL -> Internet

This would prevent the downstairs LAN devices from accessing the upstairs devices.

I can access the Plex server via my client devices using the link above provided that they are on the same network. Yeah you are right about the localhost part, I assumed that OP would change his IP accordingly, as in the Plex servers IP on his client device.

Of course it won't work.

Localhost will only work ON the actual device where the Plex server is running.

Otherwise you need the IP of the device http://192.168.1.100:32400/web

Also you MUST add /web


Sounds to me like you are running two separate networks which is why they can't talk to one another.

Makes sense,I'll try that when I get home again at 5pm.

Correct,so just one Telkom Huawei adsl router connected via lan cable to one powerline adaptor that feeds another two powerline adaptors(the one is a wifi ap and the other just takes a lan cable for my ps4)

Correct,TP link Av500 with small end connected at router and big end(wifi ap,TL-WPA4220) upstairs.And additional AV500 on PS4.

The inverse(if server is downstairs and client upstairs) is also true though so could both be implementing a firewall?

This is exactly what I'm thinking also,so how do I get them do integrate?

Can you connect you laptop downstairs and upstairs using a LAN cable (turn wireless off to avoid any issues) and capture the output of ipconfig /all for your LAN adaptor.

Well to start with very what IP's you get when connecting devices to each portion.

That will go a long way to confirming the suspicion.
 
Ok so I've just tried connecting my laptop (i.e the server) to tp link powerline wifi ap directly with a lan cable and everything is working perfect I can find the server and can even stream Blue Ray quality rips to my chromecast from a device downstairs connected to the telkom router.

So it would appear the problem occurs only when the laptop is connected via wifi to the powerline ap
 
whats that setting that stops devices from communicating with each other?

wifi isolation mode or something like that?
 
Please can a mod just fix the thread title. It's driving my ocd feelings insane
