Plex's free DStv competitor tested

MyBroadband tested the new media aggregation feature on Plex, and we found it easy to set up and very useful.

Plex is a client-server media player platform where users can set up their own server with local content, and then stream from that to various devices.

I don't pay for any streaming services but I do use and pay for a monthly subscription to Plex. It's a flippen awesome app and it runs on just about any platform.
Got the lifetime licence in 2014. Apart from my Windscribe lifetime licence it's the best money I've ever spend.

Great to see Plex get some media attention in this time of online media licensing & compartmentalization crap.

I've been paying for the thing for years even though I don't need or use those advanced features I pay for....there's always just been something about it that makes me want to pay for a good product that respects their user base and has a ton of potential.

I love the fact that Plex is still Plex after years and years of iteration... they never overhaul the damn thing just for the sake of overhauling (looking at you, almost every other media streaming product out there).

Was just telling a colleague and friend the other day about how useful the new Discover feature is if you want to get an idea of what content is coming up on other services or if you want something that creates a hybrid between subscription and pirated content... no-one else does this.

I even pirate the stuff I pay for just so I can have it on my Plex servertjie, it's just that convenient.
I mean, Prehistoric Planet EP1 dropped 12:01 SAST Time this morning.... by 7AM I had already watched the paid for Apple TV+ version and by 9AM I have a 4K copy on my Plex Server, downloaded, automatically tagged and categorized with three clicks, so I don't have to keep using that horrible Apple interface on my underpowered MiBox if I want to watch it again on my projector in the living room.

I being using My Family cinema no for about 4 years. Pay $2.49 about R57 with tax. I wont use anything else.

I also paid for the lifetime sub a few years back. Need to start using it again and checking out the new features.

Could I share my hdd folder with someone in Australia? What are the legal ramifications?

Can someone remind me. With Plex, does the plex box need to do the processing of the file and then stream it? So if it's a heavy codec and big file, the plex box handles the heavy load and passes a stream to the viewing device?
In other words, unlike (say) kodi, Plex serves media to an existing player on my TV or Kodi box rather than is a standalone player....

Then second Q - does plex run nicely on Raspberry Pi?
It can transcode or direct play, depending on the playback device.

It'll work on a Pi, especially a later model (4) although they are super scarce currently

They give you the links to download the clouds. And it gets updated every day with new content
I suppose they're small enough to fly under the radar for now but I would expect there is already some law enforcement agency building a case against them.

It's still useful knowing where you can watch the content no? It keeps the apps as consistent as possible across the board too.
But I already know that from the preceding screen.

The subsequent screen is just a waste of time.
