Hi, i currently have a telkom ISDN 2a switchboard, and i am looking to upgrade to an ADSL line... Will the ADSL line still be able to work on an ISDN switchboard

Thanks :)

I don't think it'll be a problem.

They will most probably install some ADSL filters on your line, which will seperate the voice service from the ADSL data service on the line. I've also had ADSL installed at a client on an ISDN line connected to a switchboard. Not sure of the details, but the Telkom Technician knew what he was doing, and handled all the wiring / re-wiring / testing at the switch board. I think it was a Panasonic switchboard. If you have a Telkom switchboard, it should be even easier for the Telkom technicians.

Try phoning Telkom (10217 - Telkom Business) - I'm sure they will be able to tell you quite easily. Their call center has improved a lot in the last year - give them a try for sure answer, during office hours obviously.

while yes it is technically possible to run adsl on a switch board my experience says stay away. once u run into problems there is almost no way of figuring out where your problem is out 5 clients I have that have done this 1 is working that makes 2 out of 6 ppl (counting the person prev poster talked bout) thats 1 in 3 chance of working :(
try it but be warned
i recommend rather a separate line for adsl

ADSL does not run on ISDN... your line will have to be moved back to a normal line and then be upgraded to ADSL

Actually, come to think of it, the ISDN line wasn't connected to the switch board, but it definitely was an ISDN line.

They disconnected the ISDN equipment, and took it away (i think it belongs to Telkom, under the contract terms), and thus probably converted the line to a regular line, and then enabled ADSL..

Sorry about that.. my memory was a bit hazy...

As stated by the others, it'll probably be better to keep your ADSL line completely seperate from the switchboard. But your ISDN line can definitely be converted to ADSL...

Sorry guys i made a mistake... its a Siemens ISDN Switchboard, but what your saying is that if i downgrade to a normal line, then upgrade it to ADSL will work fine?

Yip.. but like I said, phone Telkom on 10217 to be sure. They can test the line over the phone, and tell you if all is good...

If you're using an ISDN BRI it's not so simple to just downgrade to a normal line, because your ISDN is going to stop working. That or you're trading 4 concurrent call lines for 1.

Just get a second line.

Ya i tried to get a second line... but the rumor is that "telkom doesnt have any more lines" is this true??

Telkom not having enough "lines" is possible but keep trying sometime they magically find one. I don't like putting ppls hopes up for nothing so be prepared that there may really be no ports avail but its been known to happen after some persistence these ports magically appear;)
