Nope. But it messes with their plans to rollout the game to the rest of the world and to have the server capacity available to handle it all. I bet their servers crashing all the time due to the massive demand (which gets worse with unplanned "pirate" downloads) costs them a bit of money.

Ok, the costs make sense, but surely it is still not defined as a "pirated version". (not really expecting an answer, just musing)

"Pirated" downloads can still do in app purchases.
 
So I installed it about an hour ago and caught 3 - Squirtle, Goldeen and Venonat. And leveled up Venonat. Is that good or bad? I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing in this game...

One basic is have a look at your pokedex and try and fill it with all of the different types of pokemon.

Gotta catch em all...

Well, for now you'll want to try and get to level 5. So you want to get XP. This is done by visiting Pokestops (the blue towers) and by catching pokemon.

I suggest you hold off on "levelling" until you have a better understanding of the game. (There is Evolve and Power Up - I assume you are referring to Power Up)
 
Sounds good to me. I caught a Golbat this morning. That's the most exciting thing I caught since I started playing 3 days ago °_°
 
You'll catch higher CP pokemon the higher your level. Then you'll have nice strong pokemon to power up and they'll reach even higher CP.
Read that somewhere just now.

You have to have a lure (can be bought from the shop) and when you are at a Pokestop you will see the blank rectangle. Click on it and then the lure shown below. The lure will work for 30 minutes. For everyone in the area.
Suggest you also use a lucky egg at the same time.

Again, I would recommend saving lures for the higher level in order to attract high CP pokemon with it, as opposed to using it on level 2 and get 10 CP pokemon.

Try find a spawn point for pokemon. When you find a pokemon chill there from about 5 mins and restart game a few times if a pokemon keeps spawning there you found it.

you can catch +-5mins apart but be careful pokeballs run out very quickly so then you gotta take a drive to get more
