They normally take your old one from you when u apply for the new one.

No they don't. I have all my old licenses in my desk drawer.

According to my understanding of the RTA, only courts are allowed to suspend or cancel drivers licences. The card is only proof of a drivers licence, but should be represented and always be carried on you. Confiscation of the drivers licence by the officer is illegal and against the law.
